Anyone here run any kid of merit / reward system across the whole school?
We just use merit stickers in the pupils school planner, but it's very ad hoc per department and are looking to standardise across the whole school all departments. Wondering if anyone has any experience.
Cheers

19th March 2009, 10:38 AM #2 We do. It's run / managed via the behaviour management part of SIMS.
I don't know much more than that, but if you PM me I can put you in touch with the teacher (who also happens to be an IT teacher!) who is coordinating it.

19th March 2009, 10:39 AM #3 At the secondary where I am governor, we are using a variant on SEAL (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) called PRIDE

19th March 2009, 11:14 AM #4 Here, the kids earn merits which add up to bronze, silver and gold awards. These can be used to obtain extra breaks and the like and all of the golds go into a lucky dip each month. Kids have to have so many golds if they want to go on trips.
It seems to work with the slight to moderately naughty, who don't want to miss out. The really naughty know they are never going to get there so don't bother.

19th March 2009, 11:19 AM #5 In my place we're conducting a survey with pupils thoughts on it (as it's reasonably new to us)
At the moment it's looking like the general feeling is that the system benefits the ones who are normally disruptive! (The thinking being that teachers don't always award merits to the ones that work well constantly as they'd be doing it every lesson, and only issue merrits to the pupils who are usually less well behaved etc)

19th March 2009, 11:40 PM #7 Kids here get a housepoint for being outstanding, but lose 2 HPs for getting an asterisk for being bad. There's also "Golden points" for when a class has been very good but no one individual has shone. Worth +5HPs to class total. Certificates are awarded at 50,75 and 100HPs I think. 100HPs = £5/10 book/cinema voucher.
Seems to work well enough, easier to lose them than to gain them. Such is life. Oh and I think 3 asterisks in a week = detention at lunchtime.

We use a system called Marvin from onlinschooltools Marvin - Free online merit system
Its a lot easier to use than sims and the students have a screen showing how many merits they have and who gave them etc. Not rocket science but does the job and free!

10th May 2009, 12:53 PM #15 Yeah here the kids have the merit area in the back of their planner, and if they do a good peice of work they get a merit, at the end of each term the person with the most merits (1st, 2nd and 3rd) in each year gets a prize of some sort.
This is also supposed to be recorded in the behaviour managment area in SIMS but for some reason the staff dont ever fill it in. (as of september, i think the SMT are going to force the fact).
We do have a number of students who like to forge the staff signitures so they get more
James.
