    ja.net SMS Text service

We are looking at using the Janet service for SMS Text messaging to alert parents of absent students and other school events. The literature looks very god and there are a range of available extensions that can be use via a Webservice and API. It all sounds good, but so far this service appears to be aimed at the Further Education sector.

Does anyone have any experience of this service in a secondary school?

The url is: JANET txt: SMS Software for education, SMS for students- PageOne and the service is called Janet txt - SMS for Education.

Capita was looking at it for news on SupportNet. I said it would be a waste of money, I don't think they would do it for attendance etc, as they have a partnership with SchoolComms. I think it got canned anyway. From what I remember Ja was too expense compared to others anyway.

Quite the opposite. There may be no automated hook in to SIMS as others have but the messages are approx. 1.5p cheaper EACH and, on the basic service, there is no annual charge.

I am seriously considering starting to use the service. A couple of SIMS reports could easily be knocked up to output CSVs of required information and these can then be used via the web interface. There is also a HTTP POST method which I think would work quite nicely with Nagios

How much is it per text? I can get it about 5p no contract blah blah. Nice API too.

It's as I thought then. Aparently a good service with regards to API and the price looks very reasonable. No subscription and a low 4.2p p/m makes these guy an attractive proposition.
