    Website thumbnail creator

    Hi,

I'm after a thumbnail creator. I'm currently using the one Alan-d recommeded ages ago.

But in a perfect world what i would like is one that even if the picture is a wide shot, it'll still make an 80x80 square. I dont mean squish it and loose the aspect, i mean be clever enough just to make a square out of one point...

    Does that make sense?

I think im asking too much...

I do this on my websites with PHP

The basic method is to create a blank 80x80 image, then scale the picture down so the longest edge is 80 with the other side scaled to the correct aspect ratio. Then merge the two with the photo in the centre of the blank.

I then create the images on the fly by setting the source of an image to my PHP script and passing the full size photo and path to it as a variable.

Does it matter if it's 80 in one dimension and smaller in the other.
I just use MS Office Picture Manager to do it. You can reduce one dimension to the size of your choosing and the other follows in proportion.
It's rough and ready but does the job and still works in bulk.

    Thumbnailer Software

I've used one called 'Thumbnailer' (surprisingly) for years. It is really good and does most of the things you will ever need for thumbnail creation including image galleries, batch operation, linked HTML pages etc...

I don't think it is free, but fairly cheap the last time I looked.

    Exclamation XnView FTW!

XnView is what I use for almost everything to do with images. It opens almost every image file format I've sent it (even old-schooler stuff like ILBM's and XPM's), it does batch renaming, batch processing (resizing, changing colour depth, changing image format, more complicated effects) and makes webpages/thumbnailing brilliantly.

I primarily use it to view images, but it does an excellent job any time I need to change a bunch of BMP's to PNG, change a bunch of image sizes/colour depth, etc.

    Photoshop > batch processing.

You can even make a dropper icon for the desktop
