23rd January 2009, 11:58 AM #1 iWork '09 trojan infects 20,000 pirates
Karma, no matter what you do it will come back to bite you where it hurts the most. Up to 20,000 pirates who thought they would get away without paying for iWork '09 have learned that the hard way.
A recent copy of iWork '09 was leaked to the web but contained a free bonus add on, a virus called OSX.Trojan.iServices.A. This virus does the nasty work of installing itself in the startup as root. It then goes on and broadcasts its location and allows for malicious users to take over your Mac and install anything they want and modify files already on your computer.
It goes without saying that people who stole this software will probably have a hard time removing the malicious program because of that nature it was installed. Karma has certainly come full circle to those trying to pirate software.

It's $79 which is £58. Nothing compared to MS Office! As for the pirates, serves them right although I've had the pleasure of removing Antivirus Plus this afternoon. Shame Sophos picked up nothing in the way of spyware (which Antivirus Plus is)!

23rd January 2009, 03:12 PM #12 the thing that's tickled me is i guess PC pirates scan things before they install them because they know windows is open to attack whereas mac users will have just blindly installed it because "it can't happen to us"

Although I was referring to the whole cost of a Mac setup (to use iWork you need a Mac, and that will cost you a fair bit to begin with); you can also say £0 for OpenOffice is nothing compared to £58.
@Pyroman: Totally agree

Comparing iWork to MS Office is like comparing a leper to a supermodel.
Oh I know, the presentation software is really good. Apparantly. Meh.
We have 12 Macs and they take as much time with failed starts as I spend with 500 PCs and XP.
I do like them though I must admit.
As for OT...whatever, if you get things from dodgy sourced without checking them what did they expect?

Very true MACs are a lot more expensive than PCs, yet (as far as I am aware) the hardware is pretty much identical to PCs these days. It all comes in a fancy case with a nice Apple logo on it
That's what people are paying for!
I am suprised Apple have decided to enter the Office suite market. There's enough competition as it is and I would of thought the market itself is already exhausted. Microsoft for example are having a tough time as it is to try and convince users to upgrade to Office 2007.
