and our productivity has increased to "middle of the summer holidays" levels. Rebuilt a (non-enduser) server, redesigned my nagios configs, worked out a couple of ways to tune the backup server to improve throughput and cleared a backlog of small niggling jobs.
Brilliant, should happen more often.

21st January 2009, 04:07 PM #2 they are in next week at our place, they think it will be the inspection that will take the school out of special mesures. Wonder what it will be like...

21st January 2009, 04:39 PM #3 Inspections should be arranged once a fortnight, it would be like shift working. You know, one week on, one off.

21st January 2009, 07:02 PM #4 They arrive tommorrow until the end of the week here.... wonder why so many people are flapping about it.
We've done a couple of odd jobs but nothing major - hopefully the next two days are as quiet.

21st January 2009, 07:16 PM #5 Best thing to do when inspectors are in is disconnect the internet and say its an external fault to just ensure and test the teachers disaster recovery plan

As for the inspection to take you out of special measures, if they have learnt the lesson then they will be fine and carry on well after a big party, if they haven't learned they will slip back into bad habits and soon you will be back down the slippy slope of crap teachers, poor school etc...

21st January 2009, 08:04 PM #6 We had inspectors in last week - we did very well I heard lol

22nd January 2009, 11:25 AM #7 Heh, paid for my day of peace and quiet yesterday this morning.
The UPS on the comms rack apparently smelled the Ofsted pheromones and decided today would be an especially amusing time to go pear-shaped*.
Swapped it out for a smaller capacity one, so backup server is currently offline until I rebalance the load, but that doesn't affect end-users in the short-term. New one ordered.
*in an undocumented manner. Load is fine, battery is fine, handles the mains feed being unplugged and replugged quite happily, handles power spikes, but it appears a certain type of spike makes it kill all power going in or out and blink the 6 central leds constantly.
APC bloke: "Yeah, that's dead". New one ordered to arrive tomorrow and hopefully this one will be swapped under warranty.

22nd January 2009, 11:39 AM #8 One of my schools was OFSTED-ed last week , the teachers were too scared to use much tech so I managed to catch up on quite a lot of long-standing jobs.
I'm in another one being OFSTED-ed today/tomorrow and after the first-thing-in-the-morning panic from teachers who (despite having a diagram of what to do when the ACTIVBoard POS's lose their connection) couldn't see the correlation between what they have been told and what they are experiencing, it's been great. Finally getting a chance to sort through all the junk/dupes they have overloaded the server with.

22nd January 2009, 12:45 PM #9 And now it looks like one of our electrical phases is about to go - lights are flickering everywhere, ups are complaining that they're regulating low voltage.
Dammit.
*goes off to check that the Ofsted inspectors aren't monkeying around with stuff so they have something to write about*

22nd January 2009, 12:48 PM #10 I've changed my mind; if that's how kit is going to react, I hope I never see an OFSTED inspector in my life.

22nd January 2009, 07:17 PM #11 The technician never had a single IT request or student at his door all day. I think I might just not bother coming in tomorrow.
If teachers were this organised all of the time - would our jobs be so much easier!
