Default Very Disappointed with Edugeek...

I just offered my option to a thread: JOB VACANCY - NETWORK MANAGER

I was told this is the reason for the removal of my comment:

Ok, which bit of take it to another thread is difficult to understand?

I don't have any problem with people making comment but to do it in the job advert itself means that people will not advertise. We have a sponsor who is a job agency and even they get hacked off about the griping that goes on within the advert thread.

Does this mean... sponsor will get what they want and if they don't agree with a post then we will have our post deleted...?

I thought the point of this forum is to offer support, help and opinions on threads... i suspect this is still the case as long as the sponsors agree... god forbid that someone might say Netgear is more reliable then D-Link... in there opinion!

Oh ... for heaven's sake.

What is this latest thing with people having a gripe at Mods and Admins when people are corrected about how to use EduGeek?

Firstly, a lesson in netiquette. If you get a PM or private email it is regarded as very bad form to publicly pass it around for all and sundry. I would have thought more of you than to do this. Heck, you didn't even give me chance to respond to your PM response. You even edited my PM to give it a different emphasis ... misrepresenting me. I find that damn insulting. You also removed the rest of the context and also the examples I gave of how the discussion could continue but by using constructive criticism instead of plain 'this is rubbish' sort of comments.

Secondly, if a Mod or Admin does something they do it for a good reason. We have been through all of this in recent discussions on censorship. If you have an issue with a Mod you take it to an Admin, if you have a problem with an Admin you take it to DB. We are here to see that the site runs smoothly.

Thirdly ... the example of the sponsor was the fact that they have previously mentioned that people don't to apply for jobs when all people see is endless gripes about salary. We have seen this in numerous adverts and have previously said that if you want to do this take it to another thread and leave the original one alone. This is a pretty simple request that does not impinge on the fact that people want to raise that they feel that salaries for the education sector are not good enough. I support that fact, but also accept that should someone post an advert then it is not the right place to also continue this vampire thread (a discussion that never dies, just gets resurrected every so often!)

Finally ... there has never been a single case of a sponsor having us remove or edit a thread unless it is factually incorrect (and we actually put an additional post on the thread usually correcting the misinformation) but there have been times when we have suggested to the poster that their facts are incorrect and they have themselves done self-editing (usually when it comes to comments that are close to libel / slander ... and argue about the difference elsewhere please ... ie create a new thread!) Sponsors know this when they sign up. We do not respond to pressure from sponsors. We are happy to see a sponsor go rather than them dictate terms to us. People are too geared up to knock down the site due to the sponsorship or advert side of things. We have been down the route of explaining this in the past and explained why it works the way it does. Other options have been looked at and will not give us the flexibility and funds we need to give you the best site and events we can. If you have a few grand to donate we will happily accept.

If you have any other concerns then please raise them ... we can continue this via PM (as we were originally doing). If you are not happy with this response then (as I said in my PM) you can raise this with Dos_Box.

You're comparing chalk with cheese though darknova. It's depressing that every time a job is posted some snot butts in and says "that's not very good money".

It's highly inappropriate to criticise an offer in that way. If the money isn't what you'd go for, then don't go for it. If the school don't get suitable applicants for the money, then they'll have to re-advertise.

Constructive lobbying might get you somewhere. Constantly slating schools who are proactive enough to use these forums, who are at our mercy as they can be compared by us, seems counter productive. This is an independent school, which is going to have more money to spare. Other schools are going to keep their heads down and appoint from the ranks of Governors kids as usual. (oops - did I say that! )

That's not the right attitude, you can't tell a member of staff, if your not happy with the way the software works use something else.

Diplomacy should be used, common ground found, and the issue resolved between both parties. In this case its explaining ettiquete and the rules for specific forums.

I'm sure Dark is now informed and will continue to use this site for his needs.

So will there now be a thread "Job Advert Gripeing here" for links to the advert and complaints about the advert helpfully corralling them into one bit away from people who don't want to see it?

We did discuss having a separate thread created - perhaps this is the right time to do it-
It isn't that we don't want to see it Midget, it is just that the job advert list should be just that - job adverts - with any comments/opinions being somewhere else for people to view if they choose too
I find that the details of the jobs get lost in all the griping, and I can see how it might put people off from advertising or applying
As Grumbledook said, we all know that our jobs are not paid well, and it seems that there are vast variations in salary across the country - but the person posting the vacancy can do nothing about it and does not deserve all the negativity.
I would like to see a Jobs forum where the poster has to fill in a form so that we get all the details, and maybe a contact for further info, but no opportunity on the actual 'jobs' list to comment about salary etc

No it's a perfectly reasonable attitude for using websites. It's why the most popular websites are generally the best ones. One can afford to be picky as there is such a wealth of sites out there, all clamouring for attention.

When one has a popular site, there is no need to compromise to satisfy the vocal minority. As the simple fact that the site is popular is evidence for it's usefulness. If you do go down this slippery slope, you will alienate the silent majority.

And if he/she is still not satisfied, no one is forcing he/she to use the site. It's not like EduGeek is the only technical resource on the internet.

No ... that's not right and that is not what I am saying. I don't think anyone would say "if you don't like it there is the door!" even though there have been times when people may have thought it.

What I would say is that we can't please everyone all the time and no matter what rules we set up it is going to rub someone up the wrong way. In this case my issue is not so much that people are using the threads wrongly (though that was the first problem) but the poor nettiquette and the way it was handled by DarkNova. I just don't think it is fair on myself, other admins or the mods to have to deal with this sort of thing.

I would just rather people place nice.

I have to say thank you for the clear explanation of the way that the Job Advert forum should be used.

Why not change the permissions on the IT Jobs forum so that new threads can be started for a new job - but these threads cannot be replied to unless your the OP/Mod/Admin..

Sounds like a good idea. It means questions about the vacancy have to be PMed and the OP can then add more detail to thread if required.

My 2p... 2 forum sections.

Job adverts - new threads only, no replies. I agree with Gatt's idea.
Job advert discussion - threads can be created to discuss adverts posted in the above section. I don't see the problem in discussing the advertised (or not) salary of a post.
