I think most of our edu clients block online gaming, at least during "core hours".
Our online games list uses content analysis as well as a "large list o games sites" to detect flash & java games. Certainly you shouldn't be spending all day chasing such sites any more than you should anything else you'd block.
If you want to try out our filter it is easily done on VMWare for a subset of users. Just drop me a line.
Alternatively, you may find it easier to whitelist the internet.
"It's the only way to be sure"
Then add in all the exceptions for content you want to allow.
Can prob be done by monitoring the urls for a term to build a list of sites to allow, then unblock as requested.
My policy is that if I'm walking around...and I see something that is streaming media...I note the URL and block it. We don't have enough bandwidth to let every tom dick and harry stream nonsense.
I think I'll be getting the vote for most unpopular tech when more users find out that I blocked the premiumtv.co.uk domain. NO FOOTBALL STREAMS FOR ANYONE. I feel bad about it so I may allow it back lol.
If its to do with hacking/cracking or the suchlike its instantly blocked, otherwise its more of a see what a few teachers think and go from there.
We use WebMarshal for our content filtering. Does a decent enough job although its not the greatest in the world.
