I am part-time. If I were to go full-time on my current rates, I could not afford to keep my family. I am fortunate to have a husband who has a somewhat better salary. If the credit crunch gets him, I guess I'll have to look for a better rate of pay

do you mean for tax reasons it wouldn't be worth you going full-time ?

But i'm confident if a develop a broad enough range of skills or choose the right specialism i'lll never be out of work in IT....and should be earning decent money to boot.
That's the theory anywho.

I work 6 miles away from my home so 5mins travelling time, I work 8-4 but rarely do i do these hours, at minimum the school gets 2.5hrs per week for free at max they can get up 2 an extra 20hrs, the reason is because I love my job and get great satisfaction out of it.
My pay I would say is not bad but looking at what some teaching staff get is not good either in comparison but i look at their faces in a morning and it shows that they really don't like their lot and this is, i think the reason why i regard my job with such fervour.
I have been through the mill as probably so many on this forum have been with the heavy handedness of the SLT who at times don't seem to be able to see the wood for the trees but i have overcome this by sheer hard work and a sense of valour in doing so.
My colleagues aka Webman has been right there with me when the chips have been down and he knows more than most how hard it has been for the both of us.
Would we change it? not for a moment cos we have done more for our school than many of the teaching staff and we have come out the other side triumphant in the knowledge that our school has risen to 4th in the county within 6yrs due to our concerted effort of just a few members of staff and among them are yours truly and webman.
Do we get paid enough for this? well not in money but for what we get out in terms of satisfaction is worth far more! yes we could all do with more money especially webman but we have to remind ourselves that education has only just started to recognise that they need experts to run their networks and not glorified ICT teachers. Schools have become businesses (BSF) and yet again we are the ones to suffer jobwise but it has always been the same with any technical position as the people who end up in charge cannot stand other people being in control and this is the crux of the matter. There are them people in education who know and those who teach.

Yes, I do get paid what I deserve.
But my job has changed considerably over the years and I have been lucky to be able to make the move when opportunities came up. Not everyone has that chance.
It is a bit strange that I now actually do some tech support now I am with the LA (as the 'non-teaching' equivalent of an Asst Head in a school I was not officially doing tech support ... just manglement and leadership!) but a heap of my job is project management, PR, strategy and inspection / audit. Since I am starting in this sort of position then yes, I get paid what I should.
Ask me again in 9 months when I am knee deep in broadband installation reports, FITS Training, sharepoint development and school audits. I might not feel so optimistic (but I hope I will be !)

I feel i am underpaid by about 10k i am doing the job of a network manager for the salry of a junior tech!!

I've been in this industry a long time and seen it from both sides (corporate and government). There was a time when it was a fairly well paid job but lots of people realised this and jumped on the band wagon, which seriously undervalued the job. There will always be people out there willing to take less in the vain hope it will lead to more.

Definately underpaid, the sheer complexity of the network here and knowledge required to run it mean we should certainly be on more than we are now.... i say we...but im the only one that ever does the technical stuff :/

Agree with everyone else, i feel the amount of time and commitment i put in, that i should not be paid this poor wage, plus there is a lot of skill and knowledge required to do the job, whether it be network side or just technical side, unfortunately i do both.
Sometimes i think BSF will help sort out these problems too, a bigger company may be able to pay better or understand the roles better than most LEA wage structure.

What am I worth? SFA it would seem. I'm a county swimmer and L1 coach and I've been taking the kids swimming for the last 8 years. Suddenly someone has twigged that I'm not a qualified teacher and so I shouldn't be taking them on my own. So they are going to have to allocate a teacher, who probably knows nothing about swimming and they will have to be a minibus driver as well because I don't think I can justify the time any more.

I left my last job because of one reason only. They wouldn't pay me any more and I couldn't afford to stay there with the increase in mortgage rates. I wanted 5k more, but would have stayed for 3. I believe I was grossly underpaid because they did not acknowledge everything I did( to be honest i dont think they understood)
The problem was Job Evaluation, the longer it went on the bigger the gap in what I was being paid and what I thought I should be paid. I have always said that I would rather be paid less and enjoy what I do. Unfortunately there is only so long you can except being paid less, you still have to pay the bills.
I completely agree with witch, only someone who can rely on a partner with a larger income or still lives at home could stay on the wages the school was offering.

The thing is with my role, I'm generally perceived as a mouse replacer and toner changer. I'm not of course - I have to look after the whole network and figure out solutions to problems that could bring the network to its knee's. I also have to research into new ideas and technologies.
But, when I look back I don't think this job is worth more than what I'm getting (which is bottom line). I think any tom, dick or harry can do this job with a little training and I accept that I'm getting paid Harry's wage.
It is for this reason I am going to Uni part-time and expect to be out of education within two years. It's not the money I'm chasing either - it's the fact that my brain hurts because it isn't being used.

Every so often I get something to do that really pushes me and gets me thinking and I love it. But more often than not I'm a toner changer.

I feel very underpaid...i took this job almost 10 years ago, with a 'pay award pending' and it's still pending. Still on scale 2, even though the network has increased in size by a factor of 10!!!!!

Well they've got until April to realise that if you pay peanuts... and you really really dont want a monkey running a rather large and complex network, which barring the cleaners affects every single persons day to day work.

I'm not sure how much I count, as I work in a totally different industry to you guys, in a totally different job...
But I'm on the wall with this. Looking at a recruitment agency for a recently unemployed university friend (with no internet access at the moment), I found out that with my current experience, my basic could be 30% higher than it is quite easily.
That said, I'm happy here, working with people I like, in a relaxed environment. I'm picking up skills that will be useful whatever my future holds, don't dread work on any morning bar Monday (when I really just want one more day off!) and get other perks that come with a relaxed environment, like flexibility with holidays/time off, and not being told off for coming in 5 minutes late.
So I guess it's a case of I'm happy with it at the moment, as long as the gap doesn't widen. However if I was ever unhappy with my work, I know I could get more elsewhere, so it's really only the happiness keeping me here.
