Searching a folder of .eml files for a username?

    Hello,

I need to search through an email archive on our system to find any messages containing a particular user's name. All of our email is archived into a folder, and each message is a simple .eml file.

Does anyone know of a utility, or command line option that will search through these .eml files for a string of text?

Windows' built in doggie. Use the 'files that contain' field and narrow it down to the folder you want to search, and off he goes.

Windows built in search is ok for a single word in a file but I don't find it very good with phrases. Also, I seem to recall it not searching some files properly even if you specified it in the search.

If you want to do it on the command line, have a look at the FINDSTR command in Windows - a lot more powerful than the old DOS FIND command.

If you want a decent GUI based app for searching, have a look at Agent Ransack. Perfect for this kind of job.

    Thanks!

I know this is a basic question - will it search inside compressed/zip files?
