Try 32bit Vista, or downgrade to XP.

I use 64bit linux and asides from the few teething 64 versus 32 issues I'm quite happy and wouldn't trade.

I have gone off Dell for home products. For school Servers are pretty good and so is the support. The good thing with Dell is the warranty work its so easy to get them to come and fix something at work. On the other had getting them to fix the home products isn't so easy.

I have to say that I have had the odd problem with Dells (Latitudes / Vostros) but has always been dealt with quickly via business warranty.

I just had some bad luck with IMO is a poorly built system. Dodgy Optical drive and damaged ribbon cable for the media buttons. Hopefully it will all be fixed tomorrow.

I'm eyeing up a Vostro for later in the year. I don't have a problem with Dell and after using their kit almost exclusively for 6 years I've had very, very few problems. Compared to other companies such as Acer and Sony their support is first class.

If you guys won't buy Lenovo what do you expect Yes, the build quality isn't quite up to that of when IBM was making the Thinkpads but do you really need to be able to jump up and down on top of your laptop?

Don't buy the consumer-grade Lenovos though... that is how they can afford to make such high quality business notebooks

just wish they'd join the 21st century and offer a glossy screen on any of their models. The thinkpad keyboard, trackpad and robustness are second to none, but the design, screen and standard battery are poor. I know it's a business laptop but the whole design could do with a refresh in order to compete with the macbooks and to a lesser exten the vaios...macbook air incidentally is a fab business laptop. It's actually quicker and less fuss to get windows xp installed on a macbook with install from CD than it is on any other laptop i've used. One OSX install disk in the slot after xp installation is complete then the bootcamp installer launches in windows and ALL bootcamp drivers are installed without prompting or restarting until the end. IBM's system update and CD based driver installs were a PITA by comparison.

Only two 'PC' laptops i'd consider using and that's the thinkpad X300 or the Dell latitiude D420...even then the Dell needs a successor. The sluggish processor and lack of built-in CD/DVD makes it less appealing.
