This is another reason not to bother with Vista.

Having seen some parts of Windows 7 - I have to admit - it looks not much different from Vista, though whether its more user friendly or stable will remain to be seen.
I have run Vista since it was Alpha code, its been OK - only managed to kill it once or twice, but then - most of the software I require to do my work only runs on XP - so here comes VMWare workstation .... strange really....
MS always say that they don't support more than 2 generations of OS so bringing out a new version is another excuse to turn the knife on XP.

Realistically it'll be 2010 when Windows 7 is released, but I wouldn't get your hopes up whether it'll be better than Vista.
Microsoft always build from the last OS, so chances are, Windows 7 will include everything Vista has and more (including bloat). The only interesting bit I have read about Windows 7 is that it'll be modulated - meaning you switch on what you need and everything else is switched off.
This is nothing new, but if Microsoft really want Windows 7 to sell, they need to optimise it to the max. Especially as I think portable devices will be in circulation even more so than they are now. In the next few years, standardisation across multiple devices will be more common place with your data roaming with you.

MS have said they will continue to sell OEM XP till 2010 for eeepc and the rest.MS always say that they don't support more than 2 generations of OS so bringing out a new version is another excuse to turn the knife on XP.
I think windows7 will continue from XP, a lower footprint install, designed to run on lower hardware requirements such as mobiles - but modular enough to upgrade onto larger systems, just like linux does now.

oh, the other thing I read about Windows 7 is that it will be re-written from scratch - just like nt,2k,xp,vista were![]()

They are going to continue supplying XP for now but how long untill you can't install new software on it e.g. Office 2007 won't install on Windows 2000, no I.E 7 for it either.
-----------------------------------------
@ CyberNerd: Well they might rewrite the windows kernel but not all the packages that make up the rest of windows.

Only for security updates not product updates hence no I.E 7 or group policy extensions.

Plus you will get phone support.

indeed, but it's only MS products (or products that rely on windows .net components), that have 'enforced' OS boundaries. most other applications will run just fine. Besides, support on things like eeepc isn't going to matter so much for newer MS apps because they generally have a higher system requirement. Whilst applications like FF3, OOO, KDE are looking towards running faster on lower system requirements MS are only just catching up with this phenomena, hopefully this is where windows7 comes in -or more likely a web based subscription model. They are going to continue supplying XP for now but how long untill you can't install new software on it e.g. Office 2007 won't install on Windows 2000, no I.E 7 for it either.
I see bill is still banging on about his multitouch coffee table....
oh dear
I dont see how speculating an earlier than expected release date
means anything other than ms losing all confidence in being able
to get vista into corporate and education IT in sufficient penetration
Message is rest easy with with xp and plan for 7 two years from now
As for the next generation windows mobile platform...all they'll need to
is copy what apple will do with the iphone and touch operating systems.
I expect they'll get a headsup on what to include in 7 as OSx 10.6 should be out of the door a few months before

yeah, I can see this'll be the next school ICT white elephant.I see bill is still banging on about his multitouch coffee table....

While the multitouch thing looks great, after you've shelled out several thousand and put you're own and a colleagues back out to bring it in........it can't be good for you're back crouched over the thing to use it.
If you want to move it again you've got to risk a hernia if you try shiting it alone.
Good concept for the multitouch but a huge waste of cash especially if all it's gonna do is display concentric circles when some visitor puts they're coffee down on it.
