I have had a bad few months here with more and more things being pushed my way. I asked to look at my job description and was told that because I was promoted without the job being advertised there was no job description for me.
I do however have my old job description from when I was ICT Network Technician, here are the duties on it....
Main duties
Maintenance
Ensure that the school computer system is maintained and working effectively.
Set up access codes/levels and maintain security of the system.
Set up new equipment.
Carry out upgrades as required.
Take necessary steps to prevent systems failure, including backup of the system.
Resolve day-to-day technical issues involving both hardware and software.
Training/Support
Provide staff trianing on system-critical software.
Provide in-class technical support where required.
Other duties
May be asked to contribute to the development of the school website.
Advise on the development of the ICT provision.
Perform other duties that the Headteacher may reasonably require in accordance with the needs of the school and pupils.
That is my old job description, but i'm now Network Manager and I seem to be doing everything that involves electricity, only 2 days ago I was setting up a lighting rig for the Drama department.
I am currently at the bottom of scale 6 and belive that as Network Manager I should be on at least SO1, however, my line manager (SBM) does not agree, she has told me that "although my title is Network Manager I am not really a manager, managing the ICT Technician and doing her PDI does not count." Ths has really confused me, I have been given a budget to manage, staff to manage and my duties have radically changed. Surely the fact that I am the ICT Technician's line manager makes me a manager and therefore I should be entitled to pay that refelcts that.
Can someone help me out here, maybe by posting thing that as a Network Manager I should have on my job description to help me get the rise that I belive I deserve.
Thanks
dezt

Oh, also, have you considered looking at what other NM's in your LEA get payed and (threatening) to put in an equal pay claim.

Patience if you want to stay put. I had similar situation from ICT Technician to Network Manager duties by stealth. Eventually cracked it but with the help of my line manager. Check the Becta site for technician and list and itemize what you do across the technician levels and push for a change gently.
Worked for me now ICT Network Administrator, new job and title created to fit my job spec. Maybe I was lucky but it took 3 years.

Help, I've no job description
If you have been given a new job then you must be given a new contract of employment (By Law), It is within the schools interest to do this as well. Within that contract of employment you should have your duties listed - if one of these includes managing staff then that should be listed - are you in a union? if not I would definately seek legal advice.

25th January 2008, 12:54 PM #6 Thanks for the advice so far, I have a meeting with the SBM on Wednesday regarding my job description, hopefully that will clear up what I should and shouldn't be doing.
Are there any NM's out there that can recommend what I should have on my job description, if I put down everything I do then I will be doing anything related to everything, not just IT related but lighting, TV's, everything.

The amount of work you have and the fact that you may be under resourced will not help your situation in a job evaluation. if you are asking to have your job re-evaluated it should be on the basis that you have gained additional financial responsibility and responsibility for supervising technicians. Don't concentrate on lighting/tv's - especially if your not trained as an electrician.
