Reasons to be Cheerful

I have been thinking about what has improved in my job as IT tech in the 7 years I have been doing the job, and I came up with:

CRTs disappearing, so no more ricked backs and crushed fingers!

Floppies gone, so no fiddly replacement of drives or trying to find useable disks

FINALLY going over to WinXP ( yes, I know, I know) so computers easier to deal with remotely.


What do the rest of you think has improved, technically speaking?

- More remote management, so I waste less time walking around the site
- Newer computers (when I started here, nearly all the PCs were 4+ years old, now hardly any are)
- Automated boot and shutdown
- Greater ability/competence among the users (does that count as a technical thing?)

I am going to have to go with increased amounts of real servers rather than jimmyed up desktops that we used to use yonks ago.

Extra technician, which has made a wodgeload of difference

Vastly increasing number of dextrous fingered techwomen in the industry

I'm allowed on the servers now... and I'm allowed to create packages! (with varing degrees of success) RM does make it easier....

oh and the monitors thing i have to agree with.... now i can fit 10 on the sack truck instead of a wobbly 3!

Multi core machinery - more power for less space
TFTs
USB storage
XP over NT4
Wifi access
Remote management/VPN from home

I'm duty bound to say "more female techs", as my missus was a schools tech not so long back (at 19)..she's now a well paid webdev/designer at 22, and is happy to be out of it.

That said, when I worked at the council (17ish, for a few years on the mainframe and off site support), I was working with a female Analyst/Tech..1996/7ish, I'd say. Damn good she was, too.
