A classic phrase 'The printers stopped working' but I wonder if this has happed to you -

I got the call - about a photocopier/printer in our staff room, exactly like this one - Panasonic DP-8045.

Going into the staff room, with the smell of burning plastc in the air I thought the worst.
    I was wrong. So wrong.
    It was worse.

The said staff member had filled the the paper tray with the correct size paper.................
Just did not take the plastic wrapper off the ream of paper first.

    Speechless..........

Seriously? That's a classic. Give that person a badge. Preferably one that reads "Pillock".

Has anyone any ideas of what to do? Notices? Warnings? What to say to teachers?
Just threaten them. That's what we do. Make 'em scared of ye.

I can be quite scary but I have nothing to threaten them with...the head doesn't care much and the room can't be locked as far as I know. And if it could, the teachers would just lend the key to the children anyway!
I can't bear the thought of anyone damaging my new kit - seems like abuse to me. As far as I am concerned they are MY computers and if anyone touches them......

Back to the classic Phrases, I've lost count how many times I've heard:

" Do you have a spare copy of office ? "

We get this one all the time:

Staff: "I need a laptop setting up in the main hall to show a PowerPoint presentation".

Techie: "That's no problem, when do you need it for?"

    Staff: "Now".

Yup never gets old that one, but theres a solution to that, a flyer for "The Basement" and told all you need to know is on there complete with a big shiny * next to the schools suggested version of Office to ensure they get one with all the programs they will need to do there GCSE and A Level work, clearly they could mix Open Office with MS Office but if they are wanting to use MS Office to start with they may as well get everthing they will need.

One solution we have used is to attach an old "dead" webcam to the roof in one corner of the room... vandalism dropped rather significantly after that one

We have an intranet package that can reset AD passwords, and it defaults to "MYpassword4" whenever we reset a student password. There are quite a few students now who can remember that, but can't remember what they change it to... even tho a lot just change it to MYpassword3 or MYpassword5 ... might have to consider changing the default... a variation on muppet sounds good

The Basement is for students only - the staff can't currently buy from it, although apparently they are planning on changing that but not saying when.

In the meantime, Office 2007 Home and Student costs £75 (and can be installed on 3 computers), or Standard Academic for ~£115 if you want Outlook and Pro Academic for ~£130 if you want Publisher too.

Then give up - without management buy-in, any measures you decide upon will fail. Sad but true.

Oh dear, yes. The "Spare copy" thing..we get it for both XP and Office. We just hand out OpenOffice instead.

As to the "immediate resource needed" bit...we get that a fair bit. We refuse to do it, unless it's urgent.

"Can we have a projector, speakers, remote pointer and someone to operate it in the theatre in 10 minutes please?"

    "Nope."

    "...?"

"Prior Notice."...we just stick a copy of OUR T&C in their face and say "forward planning, please."

They are getting the message now.

Much like the occasional "can you do "X" job please?" at 5.14.55pm, when we finish at 5.15. "Well..let me think about it.....ummmmmm...*click to 5.15*..no, come back tomorrow, we're closed. Tata!"
