Your jobs for the summer 2014

It's that time once more when you all wave goodbye to the pupils for 7 weeks and knuckle down to the real nitty-gritty of our jobs.
So, whether it be new server installs, reaplacing entire suites of PC's or rolling out a new wireless network, what's going to be your big job this summer?

Upgrading from 1 server to 3. [2 with load of virtual servers, one for backups]

Including an upgrade from server 2008r2 to server 2012r2.

Reimaging all the things for RM removal.

Making some more/better images. [Company are only doing 1. Win7 32-bit.]

    Probably poking GPOs.

Then, September 1st [first day back. Also INSET.] I'm overseeing the installation and configuration of 4 MFPs including papercut and proximity card readers which need to be set up and working as soon as possible as there's lots to be printed at the start of the year.

Oh, and it's looking like I'm not getting the 4 weeks holiday I've still got... hopefully I get some of it, though.

    Move phone system to VOIP
Upgrade WiFi to cover whole school site. Replace existing system [Trapeze] with new [Aruba]
Move office from current location to bigger office across site [away from the servers ]
All of the other stuff that usually goes on: Create new users, promote MIS,...

Edit: Add Windows 8.1 Pro to the network [Our network does not currently allow for support of or the building of Windows 8.1 devices]

7 weeks??!!! I want to come and work in your school!! Our kids get a day short of 6 weeks and, because of INSETs, the staff get 5 1/2.

We're hoping for a server upgrade, including 2008 to 2012 transition and our first foray into virtualisation. Just waiting on the final quotes...

    SAN refresh and move around
    4 new blade servers
Running Fibre cables under server floor (still like to get my hands dirty every once in a while)
Finish VDI project and setup Thin Clients and Printer policies
    Rebuilding a few file shares
Updating MDT images and loading drivers.
Office 365 roll out, final tweaks and documentation
PowerShell this that and the kitchen sink
    Apple - AD integration

And about 6 weeks of sleepness nights from start of mid August to end of September

Strip out 400 old All-in-one machines ready for collection.
Get 400 new machines put into place.
Re-image laptops to get them onto Windows 7.
    Rebuild a currently down Xenserver.
New virtual server installs on the above.
    Replace network switches.
The normal things of new student/staff emails and user accounts.
A tidy up of the student/staff resources and user areas.
Getting the start of year fullback up done and moved off site.

Hmm, I'm just getting started on the list, I'm sure there'll be many more things tossed onto this by the end of the summer.

Most of mine isn't IT related, but we help when we can

    Swap 2 class rooms over
    Move 6 offices
Order furniture for the new sixth form centre
    Create 2 new offices
Install new pcs for these offices
    Rebuild all ICT Suite pcs
Rebuild laptops not done at Easter
Arrange for new carpet in one room
Print student timetables out and box with planners for tutors
    Dispose of old equipment
    Remove old user accounts
Rebuild and re-issue staff netbooks from the retiring staff
    Clean all pcs/mice/keyboards/monitors
    Create new users
transfer user data from primary school system to high school network (currently 2 separate networks for another 2 years)
Full backup at the end of the summer
Fit new IWB at one of the primary schools
Cover for the caretaker for the 2 weeks he's off
    Move into my new office

I think that's everything, got an A3 sheet on the wall in the office

Last summer was my first EOY / results days and I was on tenterhooks the whole six weeks.

This year I will be ready for rollover by the time everyone leaves and have all my spreadsheets, markbooks and datasets ready by the end of week one.

Not sure what I'll do with the rest of the time!

Only joking, got the mahoosive list like everyone else, pick of the bunch is lightspeed install and vlans creation for a BYOD setup, looking forward to that, the rest is all the usual stuff.

Just need to order some techie slogon t-shirts and I'm all set.

Migrate to fresh new 2008 R2 domain and Exchange 2010, from current 2003 that's been upgraded in place since NT and beyond (or it seems like it!) - thus clearing all old GPOs and mess that's lurking around.

RM weren't quite ready to support 2012 when they installed the empty DCs in January, so had to stick to 2008. Don't like Exchange 2013 so 2010 was my choice :-)

That's about it - taking opportunity to tidy and re-approach shared area storage whilst we migrate it.

@howartp sounds like you have a nice easy summer. Did you not think about 2012r2 instead of 2008?

You can come help me if you want :P got a massive list this year and includes virtualisation.
