I fell off a chair I was balancing on at work which didn't comply with any health & safety rules and landed on my a$$ which had my phone in and a pair of pliers. The phone almost snapped in half. I have insurance with my Halifax bank account which I hadn't bothered registering my phone with (only a nokia 620). They registered it there and then and I had a replacement within 3 days after a 40 excess payment. Can't fault it.

We insured my eldest's iPhone 5 online through insurance2go before she went to university.

She had to claim on the policy after it got stolen and they were brilliant. A replacement phone, guaranteed for a year, was sent promptly which they insured for the remainder of the life of the original policy. Unfortunately it didn't last long and broke about a month later. However, an email prompted a very swift replacement and that one has been fine.

I will add that insurance is often only worth it if your phone is in contract. If it is out of contract, the cost of the excess probably exceeds what you would have to pay out when starting a new contract.

I have low end phones so I don't bother. If I lose or break it I plan to get a new SIM off Three and pick up a cheap phone from the supermarket.

I use protectyourbubble.com and it costs me 5.99 to protect my Note 3. An extra 1.50 protects it from loss and theft.

I have an iPhone 4S here that I never insured and I think that made me be a bit more careful with it, though it is quite a robust telephone as well to be fair.

Wife has a 5S uninsured and its giving me nightmares as our son has a new toy now in his eyes. Though when she renewed to it with EE recently, the sales woman openly said their insurance was not worth paying, they wanted something daft like 15 a month to insure the phone.

Haven't ever bothered insuring it to be honest. I think insurance is a bit expensive just invest in a rugged case. I have had contract phones for almost 5 years now and haven't damaged a single one, to me insurance would just be an added unnecessary cost!

If it was me personally I'd take the risk and not bother but I'm primarily asking the question as my girlfriend has a new iPhone and she's terrified of the thought of anything happening to it. Her phone company wanted 13 a month which seemed extortionate as it's more than half the cost of a new phone over 2 years!
