The sort of people who don't use twitter or RSS would probably rather you sent them an email anyway, I would have thought.

Unless it supports all phone types you are excluding people, why reinvent the wheel then the car, use twitter and facebook for notification and a proper mobile site for the rest. This is a solution looking for a problem rather than the other way round.
