I want to learn to build an android app
I have done a bit of searching but fell a bit overwhelmed by all the info.
I want to try and make a basic android app. I have set myself the eventual task of creating a photo slideshow app that pulls pics from something like picasa but obviously need to learn the basics first.
Any advice about how I get started, what software should I use to create the app in?

Have you looked at the official tutorials and SDK from Google? I found them very helpful in getting going. The SDK is just Eclipse repackaged, if you already use Eclipse you'll probably be better installing just the 'ADT' (Android Developer Tools) plugin on your existing Eclipse install.
Tutorials: Getting Started | Android Developers
SDK: Android SDK | Android Developers
ADT: Setting Up an Existing IDE | Android Developers

Android is pretty much a stolen Java so most of the fundementals are the same, which gives more available training to get you started. Java Trails (tutorials) are pretty good.
If you don't know any oo concepts I'd start with learning the fundemental design patterns from GOF (Gang of Four) some basic descriptions at Design Patterns - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Obviously the best way to learn is jump in, Eclipse + ADT is pretty good these days and much easier to setup than it used to be. You could use something like AIDE on android which is good for on the go changes, don't know I'd want to use it on a phone but good for sitting playing around on a tablet.
I done some basic android development, as I was previously a Java Developer but couldn't think of unique app to write to make me a millionaire
