People tend to think this is so that it's "Under £20" "Less than £600", etc, but actually, it was introduced to force (or make it damn-near as close to guaranteed as you can) that the cashier has to return some change. Till's can't be opened without queuing up a transaction. Stops people "selling" something and pocketing the cash.

I've got a fake 50p. It's exactly the same shape and size and a real coin, but completely lacks any design. It came out of a parking meter, which is why it was made I guess. The 1 and 2 cent coins were abolished in Australia in the 1990s due to inflation reducing their value, and the high cost of bronze. The actual coins were used to create the bronze medals for the Sydney Olympics. When there were abolished, they was a huge amount of uproar as they figured shops were ripping you off, but we quickly got used to it and worked the system to our advantage. I used to by three bottles of milk from the corner shop and if I got them as a three, it got rounded up, where as if I paid for two and then said that I would take another, both got rounded down, so I was ahead.

Another reason for the 99p or whatever is it means the cashier has to open the till to give change which makes it harder for them to pocket the quid or so I thought anyway!

    Beat you to it, @googlemad

I like the look of this new £1, personally.
Not sure how it makes it harder to counterfeit (beyond getting a new mould and some silver paint) but I'm sure they've done something fancy. I guess I just don't know enough about making fake coins, then :P

I'm not convinced that works - you'll have to send some over for perusal

You do realise that now you have recognised them as counterfeit you are committing a criminal offence if you try to use them!!!
