    Tablet Schools

    Hi All

As some may/may not know we have been considering tablets for the next round of mobile devices. We currently run a netbook scheme but because of the work load and "less attractive" we are looking at switching to tablets.

We have been testing Android 4.2 devices and the choices along with the prices (starting £120+ roughly) certainly makes a more flexible approach.

Just wondering if any other Schools have taken the approach of Android devices (preferably 4.2).

    If you do,

What kind of troubles have you faced?
If your in the within 100 miles of South East could we visit?
How did you find the transition from software to APPs?
What kind of Scheme do you provide? - Do Parents buy through you, What about insurance, Repairs and the day to day support.
Do you use RealSmart or something similar (It's pretty much a VLE)?
Have you created your own APP, if so what for?

If you would prefer to PM me instead by all means, I wont use your name/school if you prefer.

Not here to cause a stir just would like the above information

    Thanks

Android is proving to be a pain with proxys and authentication. IOS seems a bit better. Depends on what wireless and filtering system you have in place.

No issues here, no proxy server and wifi is separate. Our testing is done we just want to see what other schools have done and maybe what apps they have.

We have about 50 of them, 32 on a trolley that's bookable and 18 just for the Science Department (it was a PTFA bid), so they're not 1:1 in any sense.

The biggest problem we had with them was fiddling. Lots and lots of fiddling by the pupils. So we got SureLock and things have really settled down.

We've just bought 32 goTab lite's in for the library to encourage reading, we got them delivered yesterday. They run 4.2, have 4Gb storage space and 512Mb Ram. They sound underpowered, but all we need them to do is be used for reading ebooks, which they are perfect for, and at £33 each they are a steal.

My next job is trying to block some apps from running so all the kids can do is open the internet and navigate to RM Books.

SureLock can do that for you, though it's not the cheapest.

I cant edit the top now

I guess the next thing to ask then is Who is an iPad School and what APPs do you use?

What issues occur when comparing to laptops/pcs/macs that the Schools use?

Staff iPads here with Meraki MDM for app deployment and certain centralised settings/lockdowns (though not many). Transitioning from shared Apple ID after SLT meeting notes ended up going everywhere and some staff were getting FaceTimes from others' relatives. Not to mention the constant reminders for hairdressing appointments created by a number of people...

We have a handful of Nexus 10 tablets here bought for teachers as a trial. The main complaint from teachers is that a lot of the apps they are interested in are currently only available for iOS. Most developers seem to release there first and then say they are working on an Android version but waiting for this is a pain - This is a shame because comparative Android devices are a fair bit cheaper from what I have seen so would be kinder on our limited budget.

Google have recently released Google Play for Education in the States with release due here later this year I think but I haven't had time to properly look at this. I am hoping that it includes enterprise style management and configuration facilities...

Just taken a look at surelock, looks great, but need $1000 for licences.

Any other apps out there that do the same sort of thing for a bit less? I basically just want a web browser to open with 1 url and no access to anything else except sub-domains.

If it's literally just 1 app in essentially "kiosk mode", there probably is. In our case, we needed a secure home screen with access to several at once, plus no access to most forms of settings etc.

I'm giving Meraki a go. We've just got 10 x Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 so that we can implement e-registers on SIMS. My first snag is that I need to get the firewall and filtering (managed by the LA) set up to allow traffic through certain ports to Meraki's IP addresses. Fingers crossed it's a yes. The system looks good, but until the access has been granted, I am unable to register the first tablet onto my Meraki network.

We have android via Learnpad. Over 100 now £150 device. No issues with WiFi or proxy. In fact learpad have their own management app which can be controlled via their web portal or by the use of QR codes. Makes setting up WiFi and proxy as easy as scanning a code.

We have these and the management side is fantastic...yesterday I deployed a new web shortcut to all 34 of our tablets in a matter of minutes straight from their website.
