I've got a 09 reg Dodge Caliber 2.0 CRD SXT 5d (Diesel) in black. Not as economical as my last car, the Ford Focus 2.0 TDCI ghia, but really close as it's got a VW engine.

Just sold my 1995 Toyota Previa 2.5L Petrol.... Best MPG I got was just shy of 12mpg Was an absolute beast though and loved it. Needless to say when I took a job 50 miles away, an 05 VW Golf 2.0 TDI was a welcome change.

12mpg reminds me of a shoot I worked on where I had to drive a Safari style V8 Landrover without a working petrol gauge and with boss who didn't like to put more than £5 in at any one time. I did a lot of walking in that job!

I'm a bit shocked that my 2011 MX-5 struggles to make over 30mpg - for a 1.8l engine in a light car that is stupidly hungry. Other than that I love it.

My mate has a landrover v8 which we take out on Salisbury plain sometimes - we don't run that below a half tank as that does 9mpg and if it get below half a tank and we go up a hill it can have scavenging issues!

X5 is getting 24mpg around town, 20" alloys and the aerodynamics of a brick don't help. Would have expected way more than 30mpg from the MX-5, drive it like you stole it?

I suspect the shortish (~15 mile) commute plays a part - it's only just warmed up and it's time to park it. I tend to drive it like the old man I am, I've even had to buy a hat to save my slap-head from sunburn when the roof is down. I might have to take up smoking again just so I can buy a pipe to go with it.

Another MX-5 owner here but mines a mk1! Here's an old picture, she's currently off the road at the minute:

Also got a 2013 Kia Ceed as the runaround. Nice little motors actually. Gt 52mpg on a run to the Lake District few weeks back, not bad for a 1.4 NA Petrol.

Thanks, got it a couple of months ago and very happy with it so far. It's comfortable, practical and pretty rapid too!

Very nice - was sorely tempted by one of these. Instead I've ordered something completely different - just waiting for delivery of BMW 535d M Sport in October . Doing lots more mileage so decided I need somewhere comfortable to do it all!
