This time last year I had a 57 vectra 1.9 tcdi 150 estate. It was huge, and I liked it. It was reliable, and cheap to run for what it is, I do a 40 mile commute and have two kids, so was great.
Then we went on holiday to the south of France, then it died half way there. Then I spent £800 fixing it out there, for it to do the same on the way back at 1 am after a day at Disney on the way back to reward the kids after 2 days of the holiday were ruined by being in garages. Then I left it in France and let the Rac bring it back, took 3 weeks. Dealer said not really worth repairing, so I brought a smaller Astra, hoping the fuel would be cheaper. It's not. It's the worst car I have ever brought. It's a 59 plate 1.6 se that clearly does not have enough power. So I sold it over half term, and got a 11 plate focus on the way, new shape, 1.6 tcdi, 20 quid tax and 50-60mpg.
In addition, wife had a car brought by evil MIL when I moved jobs and we did t work in same place anymore, and it was lethal, no breaks, overheated etc, but we couldn't do anything until wife got new job, so in January we went out and got her a 1.6 diesel 57 fiesta, and couldn't be happier with it. A lot safer and very efficient to run. So we are now fords. Or will be when I get the focus...
Current/Second Car: '59 Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 SXi | I'd only recommend it if it were for your elders or for your son/daughter's first car, AND if they'd only be potting around town and nowhere else in the world. They unfortunately simply transferred the previous gen Corsa's 1.2 engine into the new body... old tiny engine + new heavy/bigger body = can't cope, completely underpowered. It's a lovely car, don't get me wrong, but I do wish I'd researched it more first - it's definitely not up to driving A Roads/Motorways.
Previous/First Car: 1996/P Nissan Micra 1.3 GLX | Inherited it from my great aunt, 20k miles from new as she only used it for the shops and back. I really wish I wasn't naiive in thinking it was embarassing (bright red 'noddy car') and gave into the peer pressure of getting a new car to impress my friends, as I'd much rather still be driving this and saving the money than paying a 5 year HP for the Corsa above... oh well, no regrets - we all make mistakes!
I'd really love a 530D M Sport (E60) - they look beautiful, and I'd much rather have a bigger car - odd for my age but who cares!

Fabia MK1 vRS. Good on the straights but horrible in the corners.
Think my next car will be a smaller petrol car, my old metro was amazing fun.
Looking at a Kawasaki 300 next. Need a new job first to afford running both.

Corsa VXR Blue Edition
Company car is currently a Vauxhall Insignia 1.8l petrol.
Good car for long distances.
Vectra Hatch 1.9CDTi - a solid reliable workhorse! Not that exciting but it gets the job done, and it can keep up with the bigger boys on the motorways too if the need arises!
Shame the autobox makes it a bit thirsty around town though

Missed out on a lovely Laguna 1.9 DCi that I was going to part-ex the Astra for because of that too!
Never had a bad car... I don't pick duds!
Anyone here got a 1.9 cdti zafira? I'm thinking of getting one (probably an 05) and i'd be interested to hear owners opinions.
