What are her interests? I'm pretty sure that there is no generic "girl activity"... though I might be wrong. Seven years in and I'm still trying to work my OH out, the problem is she doesn't appear to have a power switch

I took the wife to see Alan Carr in London a couple of years back as a surprise, before the boy made his entrance a year later, she's a big fan and I didn't think I would enjoy it as I'm not that big a fan, but he was absolutely immense in the O2 and we both laughed until we hurt and then some more, add in the day of the show shopping as well and the Mrs. fancied trying planet hollywood it all made for a lovely weekend away.

Hotel for the night with a meal out. Might not be able to go massively fancy for £80-£100 but you could always get a room in a Travelodge (hey, it's a bed), a decent meal out at an Italian, maybe a drink or two after then back to your room and... well, hopefully after five years you know the next bit.

Another vote for York on that count, done it a couple of times with my missus - Travelodge there is within walking distance of the city centre, a meal out at Lucia's will cost you less than £30 for the two of you, and plenty to do & see in the daytime without paying - walk the city walls, ice cream in the Shambles, a couple of free museums. For the price of a Saturday night's stay you can make a full weekend out of it.

I wish I'd thought of that after 8 years, I wouldn't have reach 40 years of married life. More like 8.

Nice meal, and a pretty ring or necklace to celebrate.
My son has just celebrated 5 years with his girlfriend and they are saving for a house so she would have been really upset if he had spent a lot of money. So, he cooked a lovely meal and bought a piece of exclusive but not too expensive jewellery in her favourite colour from a local jeweller
    She was thrilled

Cheers mate good idea but York seems a bit too far for my liking, though this is something I would like to do, do you know of anywhere near Bridgnorth that has night life, is a nice pretty place to be and won't cost the earth I don't mind going over a little bit on my budget. Kidderminster, Telford and Shrewsbury are all out of the question by the way they're just not my idea of somewhere new

If your just after 'night life' such as clubs, Worcester. Theres a travel lodge in the town centre walking distance from the clubs and a few good places to go on a night outsuch as bushwackers and Sin which looks a little iffy with the mrs as they have bedded areas. Theres a small cellar bar on the main street which sometimes has indie bands playing

It doesnt have to anything special, just something different. What about afternoon tea at a smart hotel, a walk around the grounds etc.
If you were further south, Id recommend seeing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the theatre, but some great ideas have been suggested.

Not a clue what's round your neck of the woods I'm east-coast so west of Birmingham is too far to travel for such short sojourns, personally. Might be worth just having a look at the Travelodge (etc.) website to see what's around, they tend to be dotted a bit randomly so there might not be one where you'd been looking.
