This sucks! Will have to see if Teamviewer will work for me here in school. Does it run as a service so I can connect from home without interaction this end?

Yes teamviewer does run as a service and you can configure the client to cache the session credentials so you can connect remotely without needing any interaction from the other side.

As @Arthur pointed out in my thread, TeamViewer isn't free for schools. And join.me is powered by LogMeIn, so that's a no go!

Bottoms. I have it as a backup to our regular remote access system. Not desperate for an alternative, but it'd be reassuring.

I havent had the email, but I can see that this is probably tied in with me being unable to log in to my machine remotely the last week using logmein, at least teamviewer works on both windows and linux, so at least I will unify it to just one client now then looking at this.

I saw this on Facebook this morning.

I wish people here would realise/accept Teamviewer is not free in schools.

that's a good point, will join.me still work if it uses the log me in client? I haven't seen anything from join.me about this. Our new ISP will provide us with VPN access when we switch over so it isn't too bad, but for now we need an alternative.

I thought join.me was only for situations where you wanted to share your screen with someone/control a computer with someone else sitting at it. If you wanted it running all the time to connect to the office from home, that was LogMeIn...

Are there no other free alternatives?

Aw, that sucks. Although I guess $49pa isn't a bad deal - we've had it good for a while as far as logmein is concerned.

TightVNC does all this stuff for free, but it requires considerably more configuration than LogMeIn does. Rather than having a nice web front end etc, you have to manually start the session by entering IP address of the server you want to connect to. It does let you start a VNC session on an unattended machine which is already running TightVNC server, though, which is what most of you guys seem to want.
