    I wanted to call my son Ieuan, Ianto or Iestyn but I wasn't allowed. He is Rhys which was again very rare at the time but more common now. At least it is spelled correctly though. The problem with Ioan, @Oaktech is that the teachers wont be able to pronounce it!

    My lads have all good Scots names Andrew, Alex and Scott, the grandboys are Jack and Kaiden, the step grandgirls are Silver and Luna which I love

    All this talk of Welsh/Scot names - my grandparents on my nan's side are Welsh, on my grandad's side Scottish and my other set of grandparent's have Lancashire, Portugese and German in their blood line - so maybe if I have a son he should be called Alun Boyd John Lars

    I am half Welsh and mrwITch is half Serbian so the idea that one child has the Serbian name - Zoran, and the other has the Welsh, Rhys
    And then my daughter came along......
    I must admit though, I've always thought very foreign names sound odd with English surnames - luckily my married name is Serb and sounds vaguely Celtic so both names go very well with it

    This is perhaps true, however, tough! They will get used to it. As long as he can pronounce it he can correct them!

    There was debate in the family about the sense of having an Owen and a Ioan in the family, until I pointed out to my mother that she gave my sister the same initials, and middle name as she has, and that both of my in-laws have phonetically the same name (Rae and Ray) Then everyone shut up!

    Yeah my surname is very "English" (Norman actually...), Johnson. The biggest problem with my surname is finding a forename that doesn't sound like a stage name!

    We have a kid here who has a very long, very middle eastern first and middle name, then an unpronounceable family name which is double barrelled with Smith!

    I was at school with a Yasmin (very exotic in the 70's) Stockwell
    She was short and dumpy too, poor girl

    No lie, researching my unusual surname brought up an ancestor from a family line Balls (not my name). She was christened Fanny.

    Maybe you could find an English name influenced by the Normans after 1066!
