students with broken / no arms

    I'm curious,

if a student breaks their arm, or their hand in your school.
(edit, not actually in your school, outside of school and come in to school :P)

Do you supply them with a laptop??

    does it have internet access??

do they use dreamwriter-type computers with batter and no bootup etc.

we've got three at the moment... students with broken arms i mean.

    What does your school do?

and if you have laptops, how many, and what if too many have issues at once, like lemmings off a cliff? do you hand out as many as you can and say "sorry kid, outa lappys" ???

who gets one and who doesnt??

    Thanks

One student returned to school at the beginning of this school term with a broken arm from the summer. He's a Sixth Form student and we provided him with one of our old Viglen Dossier LT laptops. Every morning he would pick it up and at the end of the day would return the laptop back to the office. The laptop had no internet access and was not connected to the school network. It purely used for typing up documents from lessons and he would then save his work on USB to take home. This lasted until he was able to hand write which was after a month.

    @ greenfieldsupport

yes we issue laptops to pupils who have broken or sprained there hand/arm or have issues with hand writing.
Also to add we don't give internet access.People who need the internet should use the L.R.C/ IT rooms.

Also if we run out of laptops they will be allowed to work in the LRC to complete work.

quite a funny coincidence, we currently have a Viglen, dossier NS. which we hand out.

Looks like its what they were destined for.

We also hand it out with no internet and expect it back at start of dinner and end of day.

We have a few old Laptops which have been used by pupils who have broken their arms. They are not connected to the network and are completely stand alone. They are used as a typewriter and the user saves their work on disk which they can then use to transfer home or onto the network. When they no longer need the laptop it comes back to me where I delete all the docs.

We have three laptops which were bought specifically for this purpose about 2 months ago - as a result of this we have 3 brand new high spec HP laptops sat in my cupboard which haven't been used once since I set them up, all the while with expiring warranties. I occasionally take one home when I want to do some testing of something that I don't want on my own but apart from that they just sit there gathering dust. A few members of staff don't have laptops and are always asking me if there is any money availble for them/who they should see etc. I have been told to deny existance of the student laptops unless they are being used for the purpose indended. It's a joke.

Snap. We have exactly the same scenario here. Almost makes we want to go out and break a few arms...

    Now theres an idea....... :-)

It's just yet another example of money wasted in the industry. See it in some form or other every single day.

Our Old Viglen Dossiers are used for this purpose also. How odd!

Our only surviving Viglen Dossier doesn't boot up unless it's a full moon and you're wearing odd socks

Have you tried putting it on a radiator to warm up first?

No, I haven't... I thought the 30+ °c heat in the server room would suffice

Someone linked me to this. Interesting, but a lot of hassle for this kind of situation if they've still got an arm to type with
