    We used to have a pair of book scanners, their scan head went right to the edge of the machine so there was squashing.

    Can't remember the brand but they were 600ish..

    Never got used.

    Why not use text to speech software and read it aloud and have the software transcribe it. All you'd need to do then is punctuate. You could employ a proof reader for that.
