As a School have you ever used Ebay?
Have any of you ever sold anything on Ebay on behalf of the School? If so how did you do it? Whose name was the account in? where did payments go?
Is it a good or bad idea to sell old kit on ebay? Not necesserily talking PCs or Laptops but old servers, consumer type dvd recorders, amplifiers.
I was asked if we could recover any money from these items so ebay naturally came to mind.

We didn't but we talked about it, and it was mostly old redundant kit.
The idea was to do it on my personal account and the IT manager would keep an eye on it and make sure it was all kosher, then the money would be spent on stuff we needed like buying tools from screwfix or whatever. It was never going to be large value items and as a backup, it was stuff that we would officially write off the inventory as trashed.
The bursar seemed happy about that, as the auditors wouldn't mind if it was stuff that was written off.
Can you make an account for the school and verify against their bank account or credit card if they have one? The only issue with this is that it gives the account controller the opportunity to spend money as well as collect!

The school I was at five years ago sold a load of old equipment using my account. It was stuff that had been donated to the school. We also bought a pallet load of Compaq PIIIs for use as thin clients. Bargain at £8 per box.

We use Ebay extensively. We have sold a large amount of old IT equipment (usually not PCs, more like old toner etc) plus some other surplus equipment from around school. In return, we have bought a large number of things like older processors, SFP modules, cables etc that have saved us (literally) thousands of pounds.

How have you got the ebay account set up? Is it set up as a Business Account? Is it linked Paypal and to the School Credit Card? What safeguards have you got in place to prevent fraudulent use?

One of my schools have sold equipment in the past via the Bursa's own account. Items sold were payment was by cheque, once cleared the buyer collected. Thing to remember is to add VAT to anything sold. Also print of everything / ebay screen dumps if necessary to keep auditors happy. Also it's best to also inform the Governing body.

The account is set up, Business Account. Linked to Paypal, not linked to Credit Card but can be. We keep a balance in Paypal from sold items to pay fees etc, to prevent drawing from school accounts. To prevent fraudulent use - only myself and the Bursar can sign in, if either uses it the other is informed. Everything is printed and signed off too.

@fiza You can also use 2 factor with paypal for free. Its in the form of sending you a text message with a code before you can login.

Colleague sold on a school account set up account in name of school logo ( so not xxxx school)
Sold old tech desks, overhead projectors etc and took a cut on takings
