    In at the deep end...

My son has just started a new apprenticeship, half way through a rather naff Level 2 BTEC. Being half term, he's spending the week with the company rather than kicking his heels, which is good. Picked him up last night, and asked what he'd done, expecting to get "Filing" or something equally dull. Oh no. They presented him with a PC running Windows and asked him to build Hadoop onto it in a new Linux VM. So he had to install VMWare from scratch, get his head around Fedora and the Linux command line... In proud father mode, I can report that he seemed totally unfussed by the whole procedure.
Seems to be a good apprenticeship.

My daughter has just been offered an Apprenticeship with an IT Support company. She will be doing 1st line support. I hope it leads to good things.

Something we may be looking at, I don't mind taking one or two apprentices on board. We are incredibly busy and it certainly would benefit someone to be here and when things go a little calm there are a ton of research projects I would get them to look in to.

If you can handle day to day support here you should be able to handle 1st line support any where

Give your lad a pat on the back for me, it's no easy task being given something you have little idea about and getting on with the job.

I've been fairly vocal on these forums about my feelings re: the values of vocational qualifications and the hands-on experience you get as a result. It is good to see that these things are out there and I genuinely believe that in some industries, these are infinitely more valuable than on-paper qualifications. Hopefully employers will begin to realise this.

And hopefully they don't just think of it as free/cheap labour...
