    IT Staff recruitment

I keep seeing the posts on Edugeek for new IT staff at educational establishments and the one thing that (doesn't) amaze me is the level of salary offered for the skills wanted. I wonder how schools, especially in the South/South East, can manage to recruit anyone other than junior IT staff.

Can anyone comment on their experiences of recruitment, or lack of.

completely agree the work has been so dry but a lot of the jobs I see on here are all less than 20k I'm guessing they are jobs for graduates.

Well, we've had plenty of people apply for jobs who are massively over qualified/experienced but out of work. the last technician post we offered we had 2 under 25s and the 6 others were over 40 and redundant middle managers from big organisations like mouchel, serco, siemens and a neighbouring council who just needed a job and were willing to take the hit in salary to have any salary! I mean, one guys previous salary was over 55k and he was applying for a 13.5k term time only post.

Often this is because jobs are evaluated at the County level, rather than the school level, which sets an artificial ceiling on how high it can go, in order to leave "room" in the structure for e.g. the same job over a wider area such as County IT. When some of these state schools then convert to Academy status they often just TUPE staff over on the same salary without re-evaluating these jobs in a new light.

A year ago we advertised a 15 hour a week TTO technician job, we had people throughout the age range.
Had a few that applied for my job 2 years earlier turn up also.

Also applied for a 13k full time job before getting my current one and was chatting to some guy who used to manage a team in BT I think it was.

I took a hit from 29k to 23k and that's without moving desk.
