    I think you've done the right thing by blocking off the unused port in res mat room (whatever that is). Sorted at zero cost

    Take a bit of an exception to that since I have a child studying product design who had to get an A at A level for this and two other subjects - and is now doing very well. It certainly isn't a doss anymore. In fact, none of the more "fun" subjects that were originally thought of as a relief from the academic stuff are- having had children study Art, and Music, as well as ResMat, I was shocked at the huge amount of work that they had to do for each subject. So much so that my daughter opted not to take Art at A Level because of it

    Metalwork isn't very resistant. Stuff a paperclip in the power socket if you don't believe me

    I should add that I think every encouragement should be made to get kids studying handicrafts seriously. On the Motorbike Show they are rebuilding a Bonnie and when they had the seat made, the upholsterer said that he feared for the future because no youngsters were coming along to keep the industry going. Sadly, this seems to be the norm.

    @laserblazer Handicrafts? HANDICRAFTS?
    My daughter will come out with a BEng from a very respectable university thank you very much!

    (Presumably you mean the practical skills -and in a way this is my point - the amount of academic stuff, pages and pages of reports and designs and things was unbelievable and certainly not something easily done)

    Can you not like suggested earlier by @Gatt get a refund on the 24 port switch and see if they have a 48 port switch you could get in replacement of the 24 port switch ?

    That or like you did already just disconnect any un-used data points / patch panels ?

    res mat used to be called or named "Design & Technology" when I was at school and that covered wood work / metal work / electronics / plastic work etc etc etc

    Handicrafts as in crafts that you do with your hands. The UK isn't just short of BEng graduates but people who can sew, knit, saw, chisel and whatever. I wasn't belittling your daughter, I take my hat off to her, just saying that we are short on the practical skills.
