Notice Periods... How long is yours?

I am far too idle on these boards. Something I need to rectify. I always say "I'll spend more time on here when things calm down".
I've been saying that since May.... anyone, point to the post:

So today my pay review (finally) went through. It was.... not horrible. Slightly better than I expected. About an hour after I found this out I'm chased down by our personnel officer and my line manager with a slight proviso. My notice period. For my entire time there, it has been 1 month. Now, as a condition of this pay rise, it will go up to 2 months. This is assuming, of course, I accept the pay rise.

I wasn't planning on leaving right now, but If I do... I forsee 2 months notice as perhaps being a bit of an albatross around my neck. My line manager is fighting for me on this one, but the PTB want to see proof that a) 2 months may be unreasonable (I don't know, is it?), and b) It may effect my ability to get a job elsewhere.
If I can prove either of those points, then I might get somewhere and still get the extra money, will which will result in a couple of decent curries a month, and maybe a slightly less stressed me.

So, guys and gals... how long is yours? And have you been down the same road I'm treading right now? Many thanks. I promise to be good and be more active.

Sounds good to me.. there's nothing stopping you really is there? You would have to make sure they couldn't be awkward and withhold pay though. Oh and then there's the reference etc.. :?

Mine is 3 months+ ... part of the deal getting my promotion. I did get 3 clauses put into the contract though ... I can leave at any point should a member of immediate family suffer a debilitating condition, there is a death or I receive a serious financial windfall ... this covers me looking after my better half, something horrible happening to someone close or winning the lottery.

If you win the lottery - you can afford to give them 3 months salary

Mine is a month also. 2 months or more would be outrageous - no company would sit around waiting for you for that amount of time.

3 weeks, although it can be shortened at the discretion of HR/the head if I am willing to lose the equivalent amount of pay to the number of weeks short notice I wish to leave - e.g 2 weeks notice, lose 1 week of final pay. Seems fair enough since I'm only likely to be leaving if something with much higher pay comes along!

Yes, I have indeed always taken the view that I would donate money as a thank you for releasing my contract ... but I would just get bored at home ... I think I would end up working part time (ok, ok ... I *know* Teddy will say I do already!) for the school.

Mine is a ridiculous 2 months as well

I dont think theyve done it so much to make it difficult for me though, more that they realise it would take time to train a successor and they dont want me p1ssing off with tonnes of details that only I know

My predecessor had the same notice period but it didnt stop him finding a new job. I think if I was able to find someone to replace me (probably the guy that works with me now) they would be a bit more flexible wih me

Re: Notice Periods... How long is yours?

I can see why 2 months may be needed for some jobs in a school (to cover the length of terms etc) but really 2 months is a bit long. I need to work 1 months notice.

If they are giving you more money, surely it should be a significant amount to cover the jobs you wont be able to take up due to the extra notice you'll have to give? I thought the standard was 1 month, but can anyone confirm this?

A term, or some negotiated variation. Generally seen as the end of the current term. (I think: it is a very long time since I looked at my T&Cs)

If someone really wants you, they'll wait.

Have a look at your lea's pay scales and the associated periods of notice required.

Normally the more senior someone is the more notice they are required to give.

    Stick to your guns.
