As long as i have known salaried paid staff have always had to give 1 months notice and as for weekly paid staff either 1 or two weeks.

But then i don't change my jobs or positions as often as i change me socks.

My notice is 8 weeks - stipulated according to pay scale, and I am just in the bracket that has to give 8 weeks not 4

I see it as a huge millstone - as people have said, no-one will want to wait 2 months. You can almost see the interest in your application fade when you answer that question at interviews.

I've been trying to move on, and I'm not getting anywhere - and I feel that the notice period is a major factor in that. But I signed the contract with those terms so I can't really grumble I suppose.

Nuts! Why would anyone turn down a highly skilled miracle worker who can do anything with p.poor funding just because they MAY have to wait a bit longer? This is especially true if you are staying in education; schools don't expect people to move mid-term.

And if you are moving to industry and a higher paid job, it might be worth giving up 4 weeks pay. Tell your boss that you need to start your new job in 4 weeks but that you will be happy to answer any questions after you have gone. Tell your prospective new employer that you are such a key player that your replacement would need 8 weeks to stand a chance of being able to learn the ropes.

By the time you use annual leave entitlement owed to you, Time off in leiu owed and you are bound to have a nasty migrain for a couple of weeks, I'm sure you can stretch it the extra month

Not that I'd condone such action of course

If you're paid on a monthly basis - its hard to see how they could hold back more than a month's salary if you left...

If they take you to court for breach of contract you could end up paying back the wages to the school, plus costs, plus interest, and then include the time you have had to take off to deal with it.

Some schools will do it. I know 2 people that have settled out of court as a result (moving from state school to commercial sector).

Standard 4 weeks notice for me. Its part of the council rules over here. I think if you're above a certain grade it moves to either 8 or 14 weeks.

If is all to do with levels of pay and seniority, I think it is unreasonable to double your notice period just because you have gone up 3p a week! - unless you have been given a better title/more responsibility

As for whether employers would wait - in my experience it would depend on what you were going for - around here there are lots of schools with one lowly tech each (me, in two cases) and there are usually 10 or so applicants for each job - so it is likely that they would not want to wait for 2 months
But if you are an experienced Network Manager then I think they would
