I try not to let stress bother me. When I walk out of the office I leave all my problems there. Just relax and think of the big picture. Your not a robot or a machine. You are only human and there is only so much that one person can do.
If people think you should be able to do more and you are working flat out then just tell them you cannot cope. Generally if you tell your manager that you are overloaded they will try help you. Of course if they ignore you or don't care then let their deadlines slip while you take care of all the other jobs you have to do. They will notice that you are overloaded soon enough.

If not then having a bottle of JD or a copius amounts of drugs nearby.

You could pin a job list somewhere visible, i.e. staff room, and then when people stop you tell them to put it on there (make sure you put your existing million and one jobs on there first). When people see the huge list of jobs they may back off a bit and realise that their problem is a bit insignificant, and can wait until the other staff get back.

Insist on everything in writing / email. 24hrs notice on resources. Try prioritising your jobs. i.e.

P1 (Urgent): Problem effecting whole school; or HT needs something
P2: Problem effecting a class of pupils / number of people
P3: Problem effecting one person / pupil
P4 (less urgent): Request for something that is not having an impact on T&L or peoples immediate jobs, things with deadlines a few days away etc.

Re: How do you cope with stress?!

Working in a school is a piece of pi55 compared to what I did in the private sector a few years ago.
I am not on constant call out, I get home at a good hour and I get time to spend with my family [ especially my kids ], I don't have my holidays cancelled like I used to, and I don't work for a bunch of clueless IT Managers.

Working for me in a school is stress free.

Come home shout at kids, husband and cats - make up with husband!!! (Good stress reliever)
Don't worry about making up with kids or cats they've probably done something to deserve being shouted at anyway!

    I work 37 weeks a year and 27 hours a week.

Compared to my previous job as a Prison officer this is as easy as it gets.

No weekends, no night shifts, no assaults, no uniform, no riots and did I mention every weekend off?

Now Having four kids three dogs three cats & four chickens at home, thats hard work. I come to school for a break.

    Exercise.

I took up running for half an hour twice a week, joined a Gym, and cut right down on alcohol. I now feel much better physically and mentally. I feel much more able to organise my time better at work, have more energy to get more done, and am more able to tell people I can't come straight away.

I used to go to the pub with a newspaper or play computer games in evenings but these made me worse. I'm still going to get Half Life 2 Episode 2, though!

Re: How do you cope with stress?!

I go and stand somewhere with a nice view (sea, hills etc) and remember that it will all be the same in 100 years - or if it isn't we won't be here to worry about it.
I have found as I have got older that I am more capable of seeing that I AM doing my best, that I CANNOT do any more than I am doing and I try to remember this at all times.
I try to live in the present - we are all guilty of always thinking about what is coming next - what we will do when we get to work, or tomorrow, or next week. Planning is good but we MUST live in the now and enjoy things today.
Other than that - I do a lot of exercise and I cuddle my husband when he is home, or the dog (I would cuddle the children but at 19, 17 and nearly 15 they aren't so keen as when they were younger!)

If you are doing the work of three people, you need to flag this up quickly - otherwise you will go off with stress too! Prioritising work is the key I think
    Good Luck!
