    Doctor Who ?

Well, weekend is over now, what did everyone think ?

Best writing of the last two series there I thought, has been poor until that episode

Looking good though for the next series I think, given its looking like doing the proper backstory of the time war and what happened at last.

9th Doctor apparently. Which makes Matt Smith number 12!

Old school Whovians with memories of Tom Baker will know what that means....

If you are referring to the fact the Doctor can only regenerate 12 times, this was changed in one of the Sarah Jane spin offs apparently when it was stated the Doctor can regenerate countless times.

Its one of various theories floating around.
Hurt is a perviously unrevealed regeneration that occurs between McGann and Ecclestone. Possibly a la "The Valliard".

    Other theories include

1 - Hurt is actually the "original" Gallifreyan who's actions were so heinous that in his first regeneration (into Hartnell) the character had a crisis of conscience and became The Doctor (no need to bump regeneration numbers around).
2 - That Hartnell et al are just the regenerations that have taken the name The Doctor and that there are potentially dozens of incarnations before Hartnell that are the same gallifreyan but have disticntly different core personalities.

Personally I am gunning for the Hurt is the one invovled in the Time War because it has the potential to tell the story of the Time War.

ps. I've avoided all "media" sources to try to minimise spoilers up till now.

Its well known that the master has passed 13 lives, in Who there's always a way around it.

Don't forget he's also been the Valyard (sp).

9th Doctor was Paul McGann who has played the role in the Big Finish Audio Plays and IMO is Very Very Good

I can't remember who said it... but Hurt is supposed to be between the 8th and 9th Doctors.

Now that depends. It's clear that 'The Doctor', the Doctor we know now, does not consider him (Hurt) to be 'The Doctor'. Realistically, this looks to be the incarnation of [The Doctor] which ended the Time War.
Think about what that means. Genocide. Twice. In one fell swoop [Hurt] destroyed two of the oldest species in the universe. He wiped out the Time Lords and the Daleks.
So as much as he may, physically, be The Doctor, the current Doctor doesn't think he.. 'counts'. This may mean as much as that makes Smith the 12th incarnation, he may still be the 11th Doctor.

Time Lords can regenerate more than 12 times. Not just the Doctor. The Master's already done it, and I vaguely recall reading of a Time Lord that has had over 100 incarnations. Couldn't tell you much more than that, though.

Is Hurt 'the Valeyard'? It's got to be someone from The Doctor's past, else he wouldn't know who he was. This holds up the theory that he's the actual 9th incarnation (I read a news article.. somewhere.. saying he WAS, but I found it through a friend on Facebook so I won't be able to get it from work). Whether or not he 'counts' is a different matter. Personally I support the idea he's the 9th and he was the one that time-locked the war.

This is generally considered to be a joke in the Who community. Canon is still that there are 12 regeneration (13 incarnations) but of course this was circumvented by The Master.
The leak is that Hurt is the 9th Doctor - makes sense as we didn't see the The Doctor regenerate into Eccelstone

I think The Master 'stole' another time lords reincarnations if I recall correctly (its been 30+ years) which would not normally be an option for the Doctor, unless... John Hurts Doctor did they same when he wiped out the Time Lords which would be another reason for The Doctor to hate him as it would mean he could never die.

    How does that sound?
