But he said that Hurts incarnation "broke" the promise which the doctor was, implying that he made that promise and called himself the doctor before Hurt came along.

I though timelords got their names from staring into the voidy thing... The thing that made The Master mad.

    Also, Further reading.

Le EDIT: Untempered Schism. That's what it's called. Not the voidy thing.

Good discussions on that page. Some that don't make any sense, but some that do. My money's still on some hidden 9th doctor/valeyard amalgamation.

I don't buy this 'picked a name to hide who he was' malarkey however. We've know for decades now that he chose his own name after coming of age. Just as the Master named himself 'Master of all' The doctor chose something similar with Doctor or the one who help everyone. He's been like that from the beginning, the new character is not the original prototype for the doc but an aberation that happened along they way.

the doctor has sent himself information to a point in his timeline before he sent it so if that can happen (cant remember the episode name but the one where river "kills" him) there is also no reason why hurt cant be a future incarnation and smith still know about him (its also possible while he was in the big library where river "dies" he could of read about him as just because it hasnt happened in his personal timline dosent mean it hasnt happened). Though i tend to agree that hunts "doctor" is pre eccleston but i cant help wondering if thats what youre supposed to think and its wrong because its too easy an explanation

I might have to rewatch the episode on iPlayer I'm sure I was left with the impression that Hurt was a pre-Hartnell incarnation. Hint's about a decision that led him to stealing a TARDIS and becoming the Doctor. Certainly wasn't thinking Time War until I read this thread. That said, they've been going on about the Time War since what, Ecclestons first episode? It's about time they did something with it...

If it's Time War then the story fits somewhere between McGann and Eccleston because they've sown too many seeds for anything else. Valeyard is an interesting idea (I wikipedia'd it) but that would put Hurt after the the next incarnation not before Eccleston, so entirely the wrong place for the Time War to make sense (to me).

Have to admit, I wouldn't mind see some of the old Hartnell eps. again.

The Valeyard can be any of the doctors, in the books, the 7th doctor becomes him for a while until he almost kills a little girl as reasserts control. It's not hard to imagine the events of the Time War being so horriffic that the John Hurt Doctors loses it and turns all dark and broody.

@ICTDirect_Dave, That contradicts both Wikipedia (nothing unusual there then) and @X-13's link above which suggest the Valeyard is an incarnation between 12 and 13. And the last episode said he "will be" known by that name, not "has been"...

...look at us arguing canon over Dr Who! A block of swiss cheese has less holes than this shows continuity. And yet, it still makes more sense than the last half of the latest Star Trek film...

    Nerd rules - 101.

At any point during the day, you must argue sci-fi canon.

That is the Valeyard from the Trial of a timelord series. He has the potential to become the Valeyard at any given moment. Think of it as a hidden personality perhaps.

and yes, arguing SciFi is a daily requirement! Although I would call Dr Who Fantasy and not SciFi
