Or phone them up at the weekend and all but demand they go to your parents house to fix something. For free.

Being expected to work during your free time isn't right. At all. EVER.

You want me to work outside of my contracted hours? That starts at £19.50 - and I charge the full hour.

Unless they're willing to pay you for it, don't do it. It's a hard thing to say no, but unless you make that break I'd start expecting late-night calls to be the new norm.

i have no problem with being asked as long as they are willing to accept no as an answer (its not an unreasonable question) if im busy or just dont need the hassle. It does depend whos asking and when though there are teachers out there i will put myself out to help and others i just wont.

There's a couple of staff members in the past who i've broken my back to help with things that aren't work related or are so far out of my job description it's untrue but who then talk to me like dirt and never remember the help i've given them when they ask for something not work related and i've had to turn them down. These people go straight to the bottom of my list

Indeed. Nor does one wrong, so why would you defend people being taken advantage of? Because outside of the odd "mistaken" call, that's what this is.

It's one thing to have to pull a late night or even a weekend every now and again to fix a big system problem or get a rollout done on time, I've done plenty of those even in education, and there's no place for clock watching in this profession. But it's not right to expect people to answer the phone outside of their contracted hours or any agreed 'on call' time.
