Using an iPad on a plane?

I have managed to get some time off and am jetting to Tenerife in June but I was wondering what the current laws if any are about using an iPad on the flight?

Just watching films that sort of stuff.

Obviously i'd put it in 'Flight Mode' but does that satisfy airlines?

All of the flights I took last year had no problems with it. Even in the US! You can't use it during take off and landings of course, however pretty much everyone I saw was using them to watch movies on. Not surprising on American Airline flights TBH. As Shaun accurately put it 'It's like flying in the 80's!'

Thanks Dos_Box, I couldn't see there being an issue with it but I remember trying to watch a film on my iPhone (Anything was better than Marley & Me) on my way to Egypt a while ago they told me off!

IIRC, the FAA are reconsidering that.

I fly up to Newcastle each month with my Surface RT and Xbox 360 controller out playing hydro thunder on the plane (flight mode on and everything away during take off and landing) with no issues

Some people including hospitals/GP surgeries are silly for this. I had a go at mine when I was playing soduku whilst waiting (a considerable length of time after my appointment was due) and I had to be insistent that it was in flight mode (unnecessarily IMO) which actuallys renders them safer from what they perceive to be a problem than when a phone is physically turned off.

Depends on the country some airlines allow you to do that.

Apart from not using it during take off and landing there are not any laws really.

Out of interest, which airline is that? I flew down to Spain a couple of years back on a budget flight who tried to make me turn off my Android phone whilst I was watching movies. It wasn't for safety reasons, they simply wanted to try and sell people stuff throughout the flight!

The flight to Egypt? Was a company called er... JetBlu or Blu something like that. I remember they went bust shortly after my flight home. Very Very budget! I do remember headphones were nearly £5! A can of Coke was just as much!

I think that's the only reason they do it anyway. It's the same with hospitals.

Emirates don't care if you use your phone, allegedly.

I don't think so, Jet2 look to still be in business. Also they're a Leeds based airline, I flew from Gatwick to Sharm.

Thats really going to bug me now!

My husband, who has flown something like a million miles in the last two years, routinely uses his iPad on the plane. It has to be switched off during take off and landing.

British Airways use them in Business Class on some of their less modern planes instead of the in flight entertainment system.

I forgot to turn my phone off on a recent virgin flight, and got a text through during takeoff:

"Welcome onboard. You can now use your mobile phone. Remember to use the county code e.g. +44. Please set your phone to vibrate. Thank you."

This was a virgin flight from Manchester to Las Vegas.

Reminds me of Top Gear strapping an iPad to their creations as "Navigation"!
