    It's not Spam, it's Bacn

Bacn - When an email isn't quite spam. I wasn't aware the word existed tbh but the BBC have seen fit to do an article on it: BBC News - Why your inbox fills with bacn instead of spam
Whilst I do divert most the items discussed into a 'newsletter' folder in Outlook, it does annoy me somewhat that some companies send duplicate emails to the same address, often at different time on the same day!
The worst Bacn offenders in my book are hotel and transport (airlines, trains etc.) companies, and I can't block them as we book hotels and journeys on a regular basis!

I read it too and didn't really understand what it was on about - can't see a whole lot of difference?

I thought the term was greylist spam? Just looking at the pointlessly shortened word makes me want to claw my eyes out in frustration.

Looking at the Wikipedia article here: Bacn - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia it seems like the word was created last year (or 2011), probably by a hipster who thought they were being clever whilst the rest of us were happily calling spam 'Spam' and mailshots from companies we use as 'Junk'.
Possibly it was these guys: Bacn2 - The Official Home Page (from 2007) but I find it hard to believe, given the size of our community and the way some of us put ourselves over the internet like an embarrassing rash that no one has mentioned this word before, and why are the BBC trying to popularise a word that no one, but no one uses?

I misread the title of this thread and came here expecting bacon! As there is none, I'm off.

Ah, this would explain it (taken from the Wikipedia article):

It was originally coined in August 2007 at PodCamp Pittsburgh 2,[5] and since then has been used amongst the blogging community.
    And Pod|Camp:

A PodCamp is a usually freeBarCamp-style community UnConference for new media enthusiasts and professionals including bloggers, podcasters, YouTubers, social networkers, and anyone curious about new media. The first PodCamp was held September 8-10, 2006 in Boston, Massachusetts. PodCamps are now being held worldwide.
I was right. A bunch of hipsters did try and invent a word! I find it a bit rich the Wiki article says it is being used by the blogging community. I should have posted a poll asking if anyone had ever heard of this word before!

    E-Mails from spammers: Spam.
    E-Mails from lists: Bacn.
E-Mails from management: Beans because they contain an awful lot of guff.

It was the third bit as well, referring to e-mail you want as ham. What the actual...?
