    Tablets in Nursery

    I kid you, not.

Our Nursery is getting a grant [£3k, minus 2x the cost of whatever tablet we choose for EYFS staff use] to buy some tablets for the pupils, but I'm not really sure whan to suggest... I've been told they want to use them for:

    Letter formation
    Mark making/drawing
    Phonics and maths activities
    Educational Games
If we can get one that has a camera and can record children – brilliant.

Ability to save their work onto the network

They will also need to have wicked cases to protect them - although we will be pretty jolly strict with usage.

I'm thinking surface pro, because of the "save to the network" [should be easier with a windows device on a windows network] and all our existing software should work, but I have a feeling they'll be too expensive.

Does anyone have tablets in Nursery where they are?

    Yep, iPads.

Kids love them, in fact most already had prior knowledge from home so it was nothing new. Given the right apps and support they can do wonders even at such an early age.

What about saving to the network? I though it pretty much needed an Apple server to work properly...

~£400 from what I can see. Cheaper than a surface pro... but still expensive.

What do you really need to save in a nursery environment? I have fingerprint on the print server that can print to all our copiers and make PDFs in a UNC share. You can screen shot anything too.
I'm trailing HAP and cloud sync with dropbox.

Think more "what can we do with these" than, "we cant do that".

TBH, I'm thinking more "what do you actually plan to use these for".

I'd rather get something for a purpose, than find a purpose for something we bought.

I think he means look at the pros of the tablets instead of writing off a model because it can't do something.

    Oh, that's what I'm doing.

But, I'm also trying to find something that does what they want. They want it to be able to save to the network, so the fact it can't is a problem.

    Learnpads with HAP setup?

I've been speaking to our nursery about tablets and a lot of it is hand eye coordination, finger dexterity. Also OFSTED seem to have a bee in their bonnet about technology in nurseries so they may be worried by that.

If it doesn't have to be tablets how about a touch table (SMART or Promethean)? A lot more expensive and you'd only get one but 8 kids could interact at once so you have a social aspect too.

I have been looking at HAP...

We have a smartboard in the class, the teacher was actually surprised at how well they use it [they're better with the smartboard than the computer...]

If I remember correctly the smart table can be an extension of the smartboard, it's complimentary not instead of. So a teacher can show an activity on the board and then "push" it to the table for a group to work on.
