My dreaded statement was based on 5 years as a mechanic in the motor trade and the opinions of some of the garage owners i know.
A couple who refuse to work on K series.

Depends on what car you have.

Dealer is in Leicester, I'm in Norwich

I have a 10mi radius on mike brake down cover - work is 15mi

Not looking good. I'll give it a visual inspection after lunch and report back. About to phone mechanic.

Apparently its the CAM sensor, obviously not sensing the CAM..(?) anymore. As I spent all my life so far on computers, cars unfortunately are beyond me. All I know is that if the car steams or overheats I usually stop, as keeping on going can be a lot worse for you in the long run (or not too short run depending on how far you drive with it overheating!)

Check and mark levels before and after you head home tonight, and keep and eye on the temp gauge, check the oil for mayo and check oil level. Also if you make it home tonight take out an AA membership!
I had a cam sensor error on my Vectra, the engine goes into limp mode to prevent any undue stress, I got mine fixed ... a quick job and all was well with the world. My brother, on the other hand, also had the same problem on a Vectra, ignored it and eventually the engine siezed.

The moral of this tale ... don't buy a Vectra lol.

Some dodgy garage owners there then. Dead easy to work on and permanent fixes are doable without having the engine out of the bay. If I can do it in a few hours outside my house then I'm sure anyone with half a brain can too! (I'm not a mechanic.) I do know they're the most important modern petrol engine.

If the cam sensor has gone and it's using that much oil, I'll be surprised if it lasts until the mot let alone passes.

    As for the steam issue,

Yes check the water level and for signs of a leak. It may only be small.

    Diagnostic Software...

All sorts of options on ebay, including Bluetooth OBD2 for use with "Torque and others" on android.

    Official tools are always best..

    Vauxhall - Tech2
    jaguar - IDS/SDD
    landrover - IDS/SDD
    Ford - IDS/SDD
    VW - VAG-COM
    Etc....
    And Generic OBD2 leads...

I am getting a collection as one tool does not fit all.

If there is no sign of oil on the road then you have a serious consumption problem. 1L in 1000 Miles would be normal on a high performance turbo charged car, 1L should last 5-6K in any other car so 4L in 600Miles is 40 times more than it should be!

What can I say its a turbo charged high performance super vehicle.

Its had a good ride tbh, 150000 miles isn't so bad for a car of its age!
