    I Pads in Secondary schools

    Hi

Can anybody suggest whether IPads ( especially 4) are useful in schools. Are there issues about security of student work, networkability, quality of apps. I am head of Media and keen to purchase a class set as an alternative to MacBook pros. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do a forum search the limitations and issues are widely discussed. iPads are in no way an alternative to MacBook pros, if your looking at doing video or image editing work then a MacBook Pro or iMac would be logical choices if your just looking at apple based products.

    Hi,

We would be happy to talk you through the pros and cons of both iPads and Macs. For what purpose were you thinking of using them?

Drop me a line if you have any questions

One quick decision maker for you is this: You don't video edit on them (really, only light stuff with paid apps), you can't link them to any network properly and files can't be saved directly there - it all works up in "The Cloud". If you must go Mac's, use Macs. iPads are consumer devices and not designed for application specifics, business/enterprise/education.

Good question to ask. I bet many of us wish our staff would ask before buying.

iPads have very limited processing power and are not an alternative to Macs. They have their own uses, but most Media work requires a hefty processor inside the computer used in order to do the work.

iPads have not been designed with network use in mind ... as peripheral devices (like a camera) they are good for specific jobs, but not CPU intensive ones.

What do you want to do with your iPads? Only then can we tell you whether or not they are suitable.

Once you have our opinion, do go have a chat with your own network manager. Every network is different, so only he/she will be able to say exactly what the limitations are at your site...it saves making an expensive mistake

We're big fans of Square too.

When you order a class or more of iPads they're usually happy to fund a significant part of an Apple Professional Development Day for you. During which some former teachers who are apple certified will come and help your staff learn how to get the best out of the new devices.
