Wonder Why, is some scandal about to rock the Catholic Church to it's foundations, maybe NASA is about to announce something that will hit religion hard?
Interesting

Sorry; have you been living under a rock? What more scandalous thing can there be than the deliberate, top level, cover up of wide spread kiddie fiddling in the catholic church?

I know about all that, that has been going on longer than anything, I am thinking there may be something new.

Seems like a reasonable explanation: He is 85.
Not saying there isn't a major scandal for the church about to break [over and above that we are already aware of]
Time will tell I guess?

Me too, some new scandal either involving him or the church, his resignation may just be to try and prevent any such scandal becoming public knowledge.
Or he may just be getting old and has the wisdom to pass his job onto someone younger.

That is what he is saying and at 85 I think he may well be right. If so then he is doing the right thing.

11th February 2013, 11:45 AM #8 To be fair, the guy was a member of the Hitler youth, which I will admit he might have had no choice over, but he has helped to cover up a lot of "issues" within the catholic church such as the child molestation accusations. It wouldn't surprise me if there was something else just as damning.

11th February 2013, 11:51 AM #10 It's interesting that we (me included) assume there must be some sort of new scandal, I guess that we are so used to it now...

11th February 2013, 11:51 AM #11 It would be hilarious if his last official words as pope were "the cake is a lie"

By younger, you mean someone in their 70's?

11th February 2013, 12:01 PM #13 But surely being Pope is a calling you have been chosen by God himself is the belief, not something you just resign, it's not happened for over 600 years.

11th February 2013, 12:07 PM #14 The reason is that they have discovered the original job description for priests that has been corrupted through centuries of copying. What it actually says is "Priests are required to celebrate Mass" and not "Priests are required to be celibate to perform Mass"
The Pope doesn't want to be the one to explain.

11th February 2013, 12:07 PM #15 There's been older Popes and they usually die in the job .... Pope John 2 wasn't allowed to resign despite bad health.
