    Re: Leaving Advice

As much documentation as possible, well within reason. At the very least all the passwords, IP range and don’t forgot to label at least some of the keys. I normally leave a work related Email address in case of any major problems.

    @mattx: I'm a network manager
So as a network manager I would assume you would have an idea of what documentation needs leaving and also advice to the new person ? Is that not part of a network managers remit ?

Good luck in the USA, are you planning on looking for a similar role say within a school or are you looking at the private sector ?

    Re: Leaving Advice

The things I would pass over are:

    1. Passwords
    2. Keys, labelled
    3. Maps of the network (which cab serves which room etc...)
    4. Network topology diagrams - which switch connects to which
    5. Details of any network fun, VLAN's, QOS etc...
    6. Details of anything that is in which is a temporary fix and needs redoing properly
    7. Details of suppliers
    8. Details of how the school gets rid of old equipment
    9. All the support contact numbers you use, and account numbers
    10. Details of what servers do
    11. IP addresses of equipment - servers, printers, switches, wireless AP's, etc...
    12. Details of any outstanding problems.

Plus anything else I could think of.

All of these things are pretty standard to have documented anyway, so it shouldn't be too hard to gather it together.

    Re: Leaving Advice

I left a large piece of documentation which detailed
all of the servers and switches and their IP addresses and passwords
What to do in the case of emergency
details on how to use the software that I had produced (bulk adding new users, changing passwords etc)
Full descriptions of my printer and logon scripts
How to distribute new programs using GPO
    How to image machines
    Email
and my large list of future projects that I hadn't had the time or money to complete

You're probably right about the network manager bit. However, at my school I am Network Manager by name only - for some reason I am not encouraged to have thoughts of my own, and must do whatever my seniors tell me (I am still seething from a bad day last Friday).

I don't really know what I am going to do in America. I'm going mostly to get married, so I will probably have a mindless job in a bookstore for a while. It's tough to know whether to stay in IT or not. I really enjoy it, but I don't have any formal qualifications (I'm a psychologist by training) and I imagine there's quite a lot of competition out there. I would like to stay in education though - which makes me concerned that I might follow the family business and become a teacher. Time will tell.

I certainly agree with this. I'm leaving in a few weeks and although my network manager is still there (so saves me having to leave much information or documentation) I'll be leaving all my contact details because I was mostly working on my own (my network manager is very part time at my schools) and there might be certainly things that aren't immediately clear as to how or why I have done things a certain way. The two school websites immediately spring to mind.

We have most things documented as a course on our VLE (Moodle).

Maybe you also need to leave them a copy of RFC3751 as well
    Linky-
    IETF- RFC3751

And I hope things work out for you in the land of the fee, sorry free.
