10th January 2013, 10:03 AM #2 It sounded good until I read this in the FAQ:
A manned mission to Mars is expensive. We plan to fund it by making it the biggest media spectacle in history. This way, everyone will get the chance to not only watch the astronauts make their journey, but choose who gets to do so. Four people, icons, who will leave their life on Earth behind and start an adventure on a new planet tens of millions of miles away.
Now the cynic in me is envisaging the Beckhams being the first family on Mars

10th January 2013, 10:33 AM #4 They need a little progress thermometer thing. Oh man though... Mars...
STILL not sure why we don't aggressively try and terrafrom Venus. Gravity is MUCH more like Earth; Mars' is a little pathetic so that future generations of more evolved, elfin Mars-ers might struggle with Earth a bit.
Not sure WHAT to do about Venus' atmosphere though - anything bacterial we might put in there to oxygenate it a bit... And get rid of all that sulphuric acid too which might not hurt! I'll get my genetic engineering kit out later and knock one up.
If we bugger that up in the process who would care? Pretty horrid place anyway and it's not like we'll be deforesting it or breaking anyone's home. Advantages of it working would be a long-term atmosphere and you could breathe outside and gravity would be the same. Disadvantages would be LONG-assed days and nights and STILL the radiation issue.
Meh, think we should do that. Going to fund it myself selling mugs if NASA won't.
Just bought a mug off there though.

10th January 2013, 10:42 AM #5 We cant sort out the greenhouse problem on Earth yet. What makes you think we could sort out Venus? Also atmospheric pressure at ground level on Venus is about 90 times that on Earth with 200Mph winds.

Well, upper atmosphere has the high winds, towards the surface they're very calm (couple of meters/second.)
We should TRY stuff on Venus though, not TRY too much on Earth (besides I guess deliberately planting trees) and I've not kept up with the whole CO2 and climate change issue much after 2010 so won't go into derailing the thread with human contribution or otherwise to that, but I wasn't convinced at the time.
Anyway though, whole prospect is thrilling.
Just think about the first child born who'd never seen Earth!

My vote would go to the go compare guy, Jorden, Kerry Katona and Piers Morgan. The more distance between me and these people the better!
Edit:
Instead of "i'm a celebrity, get me out of here!" we could have "You're annoying, &$£^ off to Mars!"

Can I just say that the Go Compare Guy is a very nice man and is called Wynne Evans. Very chatty guy and nothing like his character (obviously).
The other 3 - agree totally.
