i just stuck small trunking above the skirting board (same colour etc so it just looks like tall skirting board) and shoved the av/network cables in those

<confused> How do floor standers help with hiding wires?

In my last place I hid wires behind skirting or under the edge of the floor. If you have a laminate type floor there will be a gap at the edge hidden by beading or the skirting. If you have carpet, just lift the edge (a bit at a time so you don't have to re-stretch the whole carpet). You can also get flat cable which is quite easy to hide even if it's essentially in full view.

I'm currently just finishing my "man cave" and have been lucky that I've been able to build all the cabling into the fabric of the building. But even that will leave cables visible between wall plates and speakers/sub. I think you just have to accept some cables.

I just meant as opposed to wall mounted speakers and having the wires going down the wall.

Looking at Tannoy V4's, good reviews and good price. Good place to start for the front speakers I think!

Many people (myself included and the OP by the sound of it) would much rather have a fairly attractive stand in the room than wires hanging down the wall, simple as that.

Ok, I understand. Floor standing as opposed to wall mounted rather than strictly floor standers vs bookshelf type mounted on stands.

Flat cable can be really well hidden. My sister had a set of flat panel speakers (basically they were disguised as picture frames). She'd used some very flat cable painted the same color as the wall. It was hardly visible unless you really looked for it.

In fact, measured the space where I'd like the front speakers to go and 6-7inch wide speakers would be perfect, if I can get quality speakers that narrow...?

And for AV Amp to power them

The onky and pioneer are both great AV Amp's, But if you ask me out of the two! The pioneer for your money just win for me.
If you play a lot of music to the pioneer is beter at that too. If you spend a bit more money the spec go up. But this is a good starter.
