    self pity post....

I don't consider myself to be as good as your guys when it comes to IT.

I know enough to keep our little network chugging along day after day. But this week has made me feel a complete and utter failure.

Starting to wonder whether i want to do this for the rest of my life now.....starting to lose patience (and confidence) with it all.

*sits in the corner feeling sorry for herself*

Many of us have been there, I reckon. It's easy to doubt yourself and your career choice. Come Monday morning it will likely all look and feel very different. May I ask what led you to this.

I know exactly how you feel, I was in a similar position at the start of the summer and was seriously looking at alternative careers.

I've now switched schools, and am enjoying it much more again.....the change of scenery has really done wonders for me :-)

It'll get better. I've felt like a fraud for most of the stuff I've spouted for a long time, but one day you'll see a question asked here and, halfway through typing your answer out, suddenly realise you know far more than you give yourself credit for.

Once you sort this GPO/GPP weirdness - which I really can't work out, not without seeing your system first hand - you'll fly through the rest of the problems and make an enormous amount of progress in one week.

There are bad weeks and good weeks. If this one has been bad, you're due a good one soon. (Probably the one starting the 24th... )

I feel like that every now and then, but thankfully work with thoroughly decent people so soon get cheered up. It's not long til Christmas break - feet up and absolutely forget about anything work related!

    Edu-hobnobs on the way!

    and eduhobnobs

I've been in your position myself. Hang on in there. Things will improve.

It is very hard being lone tech in a small school. I am SO grateful that my many edufriends have held me together over the years!

I'm sure we all have those kinds of days/weeks. I have had those where stuff like hardware keeps breaking or random little/big issues are piling up. It all seems to happen at once to like a bad batch of PSUs going thanks to a large spike and the net being unstable at the same time thanks to provider glitches along with bad updates messing all over the place (thanks Adobe).

Glaze over and keep hacking at it and you'll get through. It does make you reassess things though and keeps you focused on learning new things so you can escape in future if nessisary.

Chin up Little-Miss managing a network on your own, however big or small is no small task. I can think of techs with years of experience that would struggle to do such a thing.

Do you have any sympathetic people that know enough about what us techies do in your school. Go and have a good get it off your chest time with them... Preferably down the pub. You'll feel so much better!

We have all been there so we all feel for you.... Thank god its Friday!

You're more than likely better than I am

Sometimes I wonder how I actually got my job.

Been there myself @Little-Miss! When I look at some of the professional stuff that some people on here do, and then look at the hodge-podge of oddities and peculiarities on my network I question if I'm up to it. Its just part of the job I think! Its also what drives me to do better too.

we should all have self doubt... it stops us becoming complacent.

However, this doesn't make you feel better. (hugs)

I still have days where I think I'm going to be 'found out' despite all the certificates and experience!

I bluffed my way through my interview entirely.

One question they asked, they gave me four options. I had only heard of one. I guessed.

Six months later I had learnt a bit more and thought "whew! that was a lucky guess, can't believe I got that right!"

Six months after that, I found out I hadn't got it right.

(where would you set a password policy in a 2003 domain, FWIW - I said OU, but it was domain )

I actually feel largely competent now - I'm a quick learner, luckily - but there are still things I see talked about on here and all my brain hears is the white noise of an analog TV tuned to a dead channel.
