THIS IS THE VOICE OF THE MYSTERONS. WE KNOW THAT YOU CAN HEAR US EARTHMEN. OUR RETALIATION WILL BE SLOW, BUT NONETHELESS EFFECTIVE. IT WILL MEAN THE ULTIMATE DESTRUCTION OF LIFE ON EARTH. IT WILL BE USELESS FOR YOU TO RESIST, FOR WE HAVE DISCOVERED THE SECRET OF REVERSING MATTER, AS YOU HAVE JUST WITNESSED. ONE OF YOU WILL BE UNDER OUR CONTROL. YOU BE INSTRUMENTAL IN AVENGING THE MYSTERONS. OUR FIRST ACT OF RETALIATION WILL BE TO ASSASSINATE YOUR WORLD PRESIDENT.

You don't remember the Mysteron eyes scanning the area when they are about to re-animate one of their victims?

Edit: Mysteron eyes scanning a victim:

21st November 2012, 10:49 AM #38 Joking to one side, if the discovery is 'just' water, I'll be a little disappointed. I'm hoping for the discovery of some sort of bacteria. Holding this thought, imagine if its DNA sequence was not common to life on earth.

Unlikely. However there is a phrase that fits here. Something like 'Stranger things have happened' [but that isn't the one because that would be quite strange: Master of the understatement here]

But imagine how gutting it would be for Curiosity... finds life in the form of bacteria/single cell organism, but can't bring it back to earth for Nasa to study!

History has not been kind to cultures being exposed to new viruses/bacteria, just look at what happened to the Aztecs with Smallpox. Lets hope NASA dosent bring it back here to study.

That'd still be a pretty epic discovery though, it would vastly increase the chances of their being life (as we know it) on Mars. I know there are valleys that almost prove without doubt that there was once water on Mars, but if there is still water on Mars, that means that not only could there have been life, there might still be...

Assuming totally separate evolution, would a bacteria/virus from another self contained eco-system be able to effect life on this planet? My (very rudimentry) understanding of how viruses work (I watched a TV program a couple of weeks back) is that our DNA structure is something silly like 90% the same and the virus have evolved to take over our cells and change certain parts of our DNA. It's a bit like how difficult it is for viruses jump species (x86 viruses won't work on PPC
).
That said, after reading this thread - anything short of a black monolith is going to be highly disappointing now!
