This will make some of our elder statesmen very happy, I should imagine.
Elite: Dangerous by Frontier Developments — Kickstarter
A fully updated version of Elite by David Braben himself.
We'll just have to pretend Frontier didn't happen in order to maintain our excitement
(as taken from BBC News - Elite classic video games remake seeking backers)

6th November 2012, 08:46 AM #2 By a slight co-incidence that Wing Commander is also hoping to make a comeback.

6th November 2012, 09:00 AM #3 It promises to be rather interesting with mmorpg elements and up-to-date graphics.
Perhaps he has been impressed by the popularity of Oolite, a free, community created version of the classic game that has tones of add-ons such as ships, missions, skins and other modding options: Oolite which, despite plenty of work, is still single player only (still great fun though).
I think I may well send £20 their way.

6th November 2012, 09:11 AM #4 I knew it. As I left the house this morning, my bank card was sat next to the PC. "Nah", I thought, "I won't need it".
Needless to say, the first thing I'm doing when I get home tonight is making a £20 pledge!

Nice to see what you get for your £20 as well
Shame I don't have £5000 to blow on a star system! 2 People did though

6th November 2012, 09:49 AM #6 I think I'd rather he focused on the SP tbh; Eve has the MMO of Elite pretty well sorted now, and it's taken them a lot of years and a lot of people. If he focused on a better SP experience (where I think the only competition is X3) it'd be a lot more straightforward and a lot better, trying to do SP and MP is just going to dilute both :/

In my experience, Eve doesn't have the MMO of Elite sorted!
Eve is very much point and click....Elite gave you the feeling of flying your cobra between stations....running from the Fer-De-Lance!!
It will be an interesting concept.....Have been waiting for this since the mid-80's....and since Freelancer was completed!!

6th November 2012, 09:57 AM #8 I don't think Eve is comparable. One of the most fun things about Elite was flying the ship yourself in real time. Something Eve doesn't let you do.

6th November 2012, 10:02 AM #9 I'd say the defining feature of Elite, and what its reputation is really built on, was the simulation of the galactic economy; whilst I don't doubt Braben could design that superbly, I think the back-end technology needed is insane and a massive task to take on. You could simplify it with sharding but what works really well in Eve is the shared universe.
Maybe later, but for now, I'd rather a proper single player get done as well as can be, as otherwise I fear the boring background details of supporting MP will suck up an unduly large amount of money and take away from the game itself.

6th November 2012, 10:06 AM #10 Do you still have to manually dock with the space station on your first flight?

Yep....but that just means you HAVE to get it right!
Us old boys will probably be straight back into it*....The youngsters will be banging their heads, as they won't have had the experience!!!
*Provided you can remember that far back!!

6th November 2012, 10:16 AM #12 Protip: Use an analog joystick that doesn't auto centre. You'll lose a lot less paintwork docking at Lave that way.

6th November 2012, 10:25 AM #13 Not quite a Protip: Leave space station....accelerate away....then stop. Turn around and face docking port.....accelerate towards station and press hyperspace.... Come out of hyperspace in dock of new station. Bounce around the galaxy until you have enough for docking computer!
That was a way that my 16 year old self found!!!
