In the 70s I was a Rank Xerox engineer. A new range of photocopiers was introduced that had nixie lamps. When I asked one of the designers why they hadn't used LEDs he said the marketing people didn't thing the customers would accept them!

You can pick up a kit to make your own Nixie clock for £50 or less.
